First Impressions
The Visionary Gladiator Pearl, which hit the market in February 2008, is an eye-catching addition to the lineup of that era, showing up in an elegant Gold Pearl shot through with black and red swirls. The heart of this model is the in-house Mohawk core. It is a two-piece asymmetric design characterized by a dense center and a lighter outer shell. With a radius of gyration of 2.51 and a differential of 0.044, it belongs to the group of balls that transition into a roll phase relatively early for a pearl cover. A particular feature of the Mohawk core is its moderate asymmetric influence, often described as a mild mass bias. This should make fine-tuning easier and provide a controllable, arcing motion. The cover is the reactive Galea Pearl material. Out of the box, the surface is polished to 1500 grit. This shiny preparation should ensure that the ball glides through the heads extremely easily and without much resistance. Because of the low RG value, however, the ball begins to rotate earlier in the midlane than many other pearl balls of this era. In the interplay of core and coverstock, the construction aims to combine the length of a pearl ball with a very predictable and continuous arc at the breakpoint, rather than producing an uncontrollable change of direction.
Comparison Drawing a comparison to the popular Storm Phaze II, the structural and conceptual differences become clear. The Storm Phaze II relies on a very strong symmetric core and an extremely tacky, dull solid surface. On the Phaze II, this results in early traction in the oil and a very even, round motion across the entire lane. The Visionary Gladiator Pearl behaves completely differently. Thanks to its Galea Pearl cover and the polished surface, it almost entirely ignores the front part of the lane and preserves its torque considerably longer. While the Storm Phaze II often grabs too early and burns off its energy on drying lanes or when the oil in the heads is used up, the Gladiator Pearl glides effortlessly through those zones. When it meets friction at the end of the oil pattern, though, it does not respond with a snappy, angular change of direction, as is often the case with thoroughbred asymmetric pearl balls. Instead, the Mohawk core uses its moderate characteristics for a sharper but steady arc toward the pocket. Compared to aggressive asymmetric models, the Gladiator Pearl offers a calmer and more forgiving ball motion on drier lanes, while, unlike the Storm Phaze II, it handles so-called carrydown — oil pushed down into the backend — far better, since its low RG value puts it into a stable rotation early enough.
On the Lanes The primary application of the Visionary Gladiator Pearl is on medium oil volumes as well as on heavily played house shots. Thanks to the harmonious combination of the polished cover and the mildly responsive asymmetric core, it is an excellent tool for the later stages of tournaments or long league nights. Once the lane transition sets in and the front part of the lanes dries up, the ball lets you hold your line or move to deeper angles without the ball turning into an uncontrolled hook too early. If you tend to throw at lower ball speed, you'll benefit enormously from the effortless length this ball generates through the heads. For players with high rev rates, the Gladiator Pearl offers the option of playing the ball well outside past the inside boards. The Mohawk core always delivers a sufficient amount of flare potential to make sure the ball comes back reliably at the breakpoint. Another essential performance feature of this model is its excellent carry. The asymmetric core stands up steadily on the pin deck and transfers the stored energy very efficiently into the pins. Since it handles carrydown better than many conventional pearl covers, it drives consistently through the pin deck, which noticeably reduces the likelihood of flat hits and standing corner pins. All in all, this ball presents itself as a very balanced option for bowlers who want to combine the clean length of a pearl with the predictability and roll control of a benchmark ball.
