First Impressions
The Visionary Gladiator LE, released in December 2009, holds a special place in the manufacturer's product line. It came out as a limited edition, with the run capped at just one thousand numbered pieces. Visually, the ball stands out with a Silver Pearl base color shot through with striking red and blue swirls. At the heart of the model sits the asymmetric Mohawk core, a two-piece design known for reliable, controlled energy transfer. With a radius of gyration of 2.51 and a differential of 0.044, the core shows medium numbers that promise an excellent balance of length and steady backend reaction. One special feature of this model is the Panoptic Pearl cover used here. It is a particular blend of different reactive shell materials, originally designed exclusively for an international order. Out of the box, the surface is polished to 1500 grit. This shiny prep should let the ball glide through the heads especially easily and without much resistance, saving its rotational energy for the back part of the lane. In the interplay of core and coverstock, the construction aims to generate noticeably more length than the regular solid or pearl versions of the series while ensuring a very predictable, smooth reaction at the breakpoint.
Comparison A comparison with an established, modern benchmark ball like the Storm Phaze II illustrates the specific orientation of the Visionary Gladiator LE quite precisely. The Storm Phaze II uses a strong symmetric core in combination with an extremely tacky, dull solid surface. On the Phaze II this results in early traction in the oil and a very even, strongly arcing motion across the whole lane that shines on fresh oil. The Visionary Gladiator LE, on the other hand, behaves completely differently. Thanks to its Panoptic Pearl cover and the polished surface, it almost entirely ignores the front part of the lane and holds on to its torque considerably longer. Where the Storm Phaze II often grabs too early on drying lanes and burns off its energy before reaching the pins, the Gladiator LE really comes into its own in those situations. When it meets friction at the end of the oil pattern, however, it does not respond with an uncontrollable, aggressively angular change of direction, as many strongly asymmetric pearl balls do. Instead, the Mohawk core uses its moderate specs for a smooth and controllable move toward the pocket. Compared with more aggressive asymmetric models, the Gladiator LE therefore offers noticeably calmer and more forgiving ball motion on drier lanes, while unlike the Storm Phaze II it delivers the length that is absolutely necessary once the oil in the front part of the lane has already been played off heavily.
On the Lanes The absolutely ideal environment for the Visionary Gladiator LE is lane conditions with light to medium oil volume as well as heavily played, older house shots. Through the harmonious combination of the polished cover and the mildly responsive asymmetric core, it is an outstanding tool for the later stages of tournaments or long league nights. When the lane transition sets in massively and the front part of the lane dries up, the ball lets you hold your line without the ball going into an uncontrolled hook too early. If you tend to have lower ball speed, you'll benefit enormously from the effortless length this ball generates through the heads. If you have a very high rev rate, the Gladiator LE gives you the option of choosing deeper angles and sending the ball well out over the inside boards. The Mohawk core always supplies a sufficient amount of flare potential to make sure the ball comes back reliably at the breakpoint. Another essential performance feature of this model is its surprisingly consistent carry. Although the ball was primarily designed for drier conditions, the asymmetric core stands up steadily on the pin deck and transfers the stored energy very efficiently into the pins, which noticeably reduces the likelihood of flat hits and standing corner pins. All in all, this limited edition is a very specific but extremely effective solution for bowlers looking for a clean and controlled ball motion when regular balls simply react too strongly to reduced amounts of oil.
