First Impressions
The Storm Ghost Lock, which returned to the market in April 2022 as a sought-after "Overseas Release" (international release), brings back one of the most popular core combinations. Visually, the ball usually stands out with its familiar White, Black and Indigo color scheme, which makes it instantly recognizable on the shelf. At its heart sits the legendary RAD-X Core, an asymmetric core with extremely strong numbers: a low 2.48 RG and a high 0.054 differential (at 15 lbs), plus a strong intermediate differential of 0.018. The special part is the shell: Storm uses the grabby NRG-2 Solid Reactive coverstock, but gives it a 1500-grit polished finish out of the box. This combination of "solid" and "shine" promises a unique mix of chemical traction and mechanical length.
Comparison Among asymmetric balls, the Ghost Lock holds a special place. Compared to the original Storm Lock (Nano Pearl), the Ghost Lock reads the midlane a bit earlier thanks to the solid cover and looks rounder, but retains plenty of length because of the polish. Compared to the Storm Dark Code, which is also a polished asymmetric, the Ghost Lock feels somewhat more stable in oil and less prone to over/under reactions, since the solid base smooths out the friction spikes better. Against a pure snow tire like the Storm Proton Physix, it is considerably cleaner through the heads and offers noticeably more kick on the backend. It behaves similarly to a Roto Grip RST X-2, but the RAD-X core gives it even stronger torque at the breakpoint.
On the Lanes The Ghost Lock is a phenomenal choice for the transition phase, once the fresh oil has broken down but there is still enough volume on the lane to justify a strong core. It is the ideal step-down from balls like the Storm Phaze II or the Reality when those start hooking too early or losing energy. Thanks to the polish it glides effortlessly through played-in heads, while the NRG-2 solid cover makes sure the ball does not skid through medium-heavy oil but slows down reliably. That lets you play deeper angles and open up the lane without sacrificing control at the breakpoint. It generates a lot of entry angle while staying more predictable than many pearl asymmetrics.
