First Impressions
The Roto Grip Gem Hybrid, an international release from September 2022, brings an interesting variation to the popular Gem series. Visually, the ball usually shows up in a dark combination of black, gold and purple that signals both elegance and power. The technical heart of the ball is the mighty asymmetric Defiant LRG core, which with an extremely low 2.47 RG and a high 0.053 differential (at 15 lbs) produces one of the earliest and strongest revving characteristics on the market. Here, this "motor" is paired with the Hyper Response Hybrid Reactive coverstock. Unlike the original Gem, which plowed through the oil with a rough solid surface, the Hybrid comes with the 4K-Fast finish. This smoother surface lets the ball get through the heads considerably more easily and store its energy more efficiently for the breakpoint, without giving up the typical stability of the Defiant core in oil.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Roto Grip Gem (solid), the Gem Hybrid runs noticeably longer and more angular. Where the solid Gem often seems to hook right off your feet and smooths the lane out extremely, the Hybrid offers more "pop" at the end of the pattern and a steeper entry angle into the pocket. Comparing it to the Roto Grip RST X-3, which is also a hybrid, the differences in core philosophy become clear: the RST X-3 (higher RG) goes longer and reacts more sharply to friction, while the Gem Hybrid gets into its rotation earlier thanks to the Defiant LRG core and creates a heavier, more continuous motion through the pins. Against a Storm Infinite PhysiX, the Gem Hybrid comes across as overall stronger in oil and less prone to "wiggle" in the midlane, since the core works more dominantly.
On the Lanes
The Roto Grip Gem Hybrid is an excellent choice for medium to heavier oil patterns. It serves as a perfect transition ball when the original Gem or other "snow tires" start to burn up energy too early and hit flat. Thanks to the hybrid cover and the 4K-Fast finish, you can move further left and open up the boards, since the ball generates enough length not to roll out early but, thanks to the strong core, also doesn't slide through the oil. It offers the security of a big asymmetric with the backend reaction needed to keep the carry even from deeper angles. It shows its strengths especially on lanes that are dry up front and oily down the back (carrydown), because it glides through the heads yet is still strong enough to work on the backend.
