First Impressions
The Ebonite Game Breaker from July 2007 is considered one of the most distinctive milestones in the history of reactive bowling balls. Visually, the ball comes in a classic, understated design in black and purple. Under the hood, however, sits a technical package that set the standard at the time. The heart of the ball is the symmetrical V2 core. At 15 pounds, this core is characterized by an extremely low RG value of 2.450. That number was so low that it contributed significantly to later USBC rule changes regarding permissible RG specifications. This strongly rolling core is paired with the GB 10.7 Solid Reactive cover. The surface is dulled at the factory with a 2000 Abralon pad, which gives the ball strong traction by nature. Through this combination of extremely early roll potential and a tacky surface, the Ebonite Game Breaker is designed to build traction very early in the heads and to generate a controllable but powerful move toward the pocket. The matte properties of the cover ensure that the ball does not react abruptly to friction but instead describes a predictable, steady arc.
Comparison Compared with other benchmark balls, the Ebonite Game Breaker positions itself as an extremely smooth-running, early-reading ball. Set against the Storm Phaze II, for example, which is likewise regarded as a modern benchmark with a symmetrical core and a solid cover, the original Game Breaker shows a tendency to enter the roll phase minimally earlier thanks to its even lower RG value. While the Storm Phaze II is a bit rounder and more forgiving through the midlane, the Ebonite Game Breaker's extremely low moment of inertia should build even more consistent rotation right out of your hand. In a direct comparison with the Storm Hy-Road, another classic from a similar era, it becomes clear that the Ebonite Game Breaker creates noticeably less length. The Storm Hy-Road uses a hybrid cover and a higher RG value, which allows it to get through the heads more easily and react more angularly at the end of the oil pattern. The Game Breaker, on the other hand, prefers to read the lane from front to back, which makes it less prone to sudden reactions at the breakpoint but can also mean earlier energy loss on heavily dried-up conditions. The continuous move into the pocket produces excellent carry, since energy is released very evenly and forcefully.
On the Lanes Conceptually, the Ebonite Game Breaker is laid out as an ideal ball for fresh and medium to heavy oil conditions. With its early roll and matte cover, it is the perfect tool for decoding oil patterns that are hard to read. Bowlers prefer to use it as the first ball out of the bag to get a clear picture of how the boards are behaving. The design is meant to make the ball less sensitive to mistakes in ball speed or release, since the core pushes strongly into forward rotation on its own. If you have lower ball speed or a high rev rate, however, that early roll can mean the ball gives up too much energy before the breakpoint once transition sets in. In those scenarios adjustments are necessary, moving farther inside and looking for more oil in the middle of the lane to preserve length. On the other hand, if you throw the ball fast you benefit enormously from the strong traction, because the ball won't slide past the breakpoint. The combination of the V2 core and the GB 10.7 surface ensures that enough hook is generated without losing control. As soon as the lane conditions change and the heads get drier, the ball's matte, early-rolling characteristics reach their limits. At that point it is generally advisable to switch to balls with a shinier cover or a higher RG value in order to secure the necessary length and the optimal entry angle into the pocket.
