First Impressions
The Motiv Freestyle Rush was released in May 2018 as a performance update within the Freestyle series and is available in two eye-catching color combinations: Turquoise/Purple Pearl and Red/Blue Pearl. Compared to its predecessors, this ball features a modified Recon core, which in the 15-pound version shows an RG of 2.60 and an increased differential of 0.030. This adjustment aims to raise the flare potential and create a more pronounced move in the backend. For the coverstock, the Freestyle Rush uses Agility LFP (Low Friction Pearl) Reactive, finished at the factory with a 5500 grit Laser Scan Polish (LSP). The combination of the high-RG core and the low-friction surface is designed to get maximum length through the heads and store energy for an angular reaction at the breakpoint.
Comparison Within the Motiv lineup, the Freestyle Rush offers a noticeably more aggressive backend move than the original Motiv Freestyle. Where the original Freestyle describes a softer, more controlled arc, the "boost" in the Rush's differential produces roughly three to four boards more total hook and a sharper entry angle. Compared to the Motiv Hydra, the Freestyle Rush shows a cleaner skid phase through the heads, but reacts less sensitively to small amounts of oil in the midlane. Compared to the Storm Tropical Surge, the Freestyle Rush offers a substantially stronger change of direction and more continuation through the pins, since the Recon core works more dynamically than the core of the Tropical series. Compared to the Motiv Octane Carbon, the Freestyle Rush lands about five boards weaker, but keeps a similarly angular character, which makes it an ideal complement when the Octane Carbon reacts too early on dried-up lanes.
On the Lanes The Motiv Freestyle Rush is primarily designed for light oil conditions and dry lane surfaces. Its biggest strength lies in its ability to get through the heads absolutely clean, even when they are already heavily used or "burned." It is the ideal ball for later stages of a block or tournament, when you are forced to move deeper toward the middle of the lane and play over the friction. If you have a high rev rate, it provides the control needed to avoid overreacting on dry lanes, while if you have less rotation, you'll benefit from the angular backend reaction to optimize carry. On typical house shots it can be used as an excellent transition ball once stronger benchmark balls start losing energy in the midlane. On high oil volume or long sport patterns, however, the ball is not recommended, since the Agility LFP cover does not provide enough traction to get out of the oil in time. Within its intended range on light oil, though, the Freestyle Rush delivers an unusually high level of dynamics and angle for this price class.
