First Impressions
The DV8 Freakshow Solid, released in November 2016, brings an aggressive solid addition to the popular mid-performance line. Visually, the ball stands out with its striking combination of blue and orange solid that immediately grabs attention. Inside works the proven Freakshow Symmetric core, which comes with an extremely low 2.481 RG and a differential of 0.054 (at 15 lbs) that is unusually high for this price range. These numbers point to very quick revving up and massive flare potential. The core is wrapped in the Class 8 Solid Reactive coverstock, finished out of the box with a 500/1500 Siaair Micro Pad. This combination of coarse finish, low RG and high differential promises enormous traction and a definite move in oil that goes well beyond what you would normally expect in this segment.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original DV8 Freakshow (Pearl), which shows a classic skid/flip reaction, the Solid gets going considerably earlier and rounder. While the Pearl skids across the oil and reacts sharply at the breakpoint, the Solid digs into the lane right away and provides a controlled but strong arc. Put next to a market leader like the Storm Phaze II (also a symmetric solid with low RG), the Freakshow Solid shows a surprisingly similar philosophy: early read and continuous motion. The Phaze II often feels a bit more emphatic at the pin deck, but thanks to its higher differential (0.054 vs. 0.051) the Freakshow Solid frequently offers even a little more flare potential. Against a DV8 Grudge, which is built for the heaviest oil, the Freakshow Solid serves as the ideal step down when the Grudge burns up too early but you still need the security of a solid cover.
On the Lanes
The Freakshow Solid is an absolute workhorse for medium to heavy oil. It is far more than just an entry-level ball; it functions as a strong benchmark ball for league bowlers and tournament competitors. Its strength lies in the midlane: it reads the oil reliably and keeps the ball from sliding too far outside (over/under protection). Thanks to the high differential it generates plenty of motion even at lower rev rates, which makes it attractive to a wide range of styles. It works excellently on fresh house patterns for controlling the lane. Once the heads dry up significantly, though, you should switch to a polished ball like the Freakshow Pearl, since the Solid will otherwise lose too much energy on the way to the pocket.
