First Impressions
The DV8 Freakshow Flip was introduced in July 2017 as a visually and technically striking option in the mid-price segment. The ball comes in a dynamic pearl color scheme of Black, Teal and Silver. Inside works the proven Freakshow Symmetric Core, which delivers exceptionally strong numbers for this price class: at 15 pounds the RG is a low 2.481 and the differential sits at a very high 0.054. This combination provides enormous flare potential and quick rotation. The cover is the Class 2B Pearl Reactive coverstock. Out of the box, the ball is prepped with a 500 Siaair Micro Pad and then brought to a high gloss with Crown Factory Compound and Crown Factory Polish. This setup is explicitly designed to generate maximum length through the heads and to conserve all of the energy for an explosive reaction at the end of the oil pattern.
Comparison In comparison, the DV8 Freakshow Flip clearly sets itself apart from other balls in its category. Compared directly to the original DV8 Freakshow (solid), the Flip version, as the name suggests, offers a much more drastic change of direction at the breakpoint. While the solid ball reads earlier and runs rounder, the Flip glides effortlessly through the first two thirds of the lane and then reacts to friction abruptly. Compared to the Storm Match Up Pearl, which is also designed for drier lanes, the Freakshow Flip has a considerably higher differential (0.054 vs. 0.030), which allows it to cover more boards and still hook powerfully with a bit more oil in the backend. Against an entry-level ball like the Brunswick Rhino, the Freakshow Flip is much more dynamic and offers better carry thanks to the stronger core, since it mixes the pins more aggressively.
On the Lanes The ideal range of use for the DV8 Freakshow Flip is light to medium oil conditions as well as periods of heavy transition. It is the perfect choice when the heads dry up ("fried heads") and stronger balls lose energy too early. Thanks to the polished pearl surface it ignores the dry areas in the front part of the lane and stores its power for the backend. If you are looking for a classic "skid-flip" reaction, you will love this ball. It lets you move well inside and throw the ball out to the dry outside boards, from where it returns to the pocket with high speed. If you have a lower rev rate, the rev-happy core gives you support to still create a dynamic entry angle. On fresh, heavy oil it should be avoided, however, since it tends to slide too far there and doesn't hit the pocket optimally.
