First Impressions
The Motiv Forge Ember, released in August 2022, brings the popular Forge line back into focus for heavier oil conditions. Visually, the ball shows up in a striking mix of Tour Orange, Slate Grey and Black Solid, giving it a fiery look. The technical heart is the proven symmetrical Detonator core. With a low 2.47 RG and a very high 0.055 differential (at 15 lbs), this core is designed to rev up extremely early and generate massive flare potential. The innovation lies in the shell: Motiv uses the Infusion MXC Hybrid Reactive coverstock here. This technology combines the strong traction of a solid cover with the energy storage of a pearl. Out of the box, the ball comes with a 2000 grit LSS (Laser Scan Sanded) finish. In combination with the strong core, this matte surface provides a very early, stable read of the lane and keeps the ball from sliding on fresh oil.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Motiv Iron Forge, which uses the same core but comes with a polished pearl surface, the Forge Ember behaves completely differently. Where the Iron Forge looks for length and reacts angularly at the breakpoint, the Ember digs into the surface much earlier and produces a smooth, controllable arc. Its overall hook is noticeably stronger. Compared to the original Motiv Forge Flare (solid), the Ember offers a bit more length thanks to the hybrid component and holds a touch more energy for the backend, without sacrificing stability in oil. Against a market standard like the Storm Phaze II, the Forge Ember often comes across as a shade more aggressive in the heads, since the MXC cover chemistry is known for creating an extreme amount of friction and practically soaking up the oil.
On the Lanes
The Motiv Forge Ember is primarily designed for medium to heavy oil patterns and works excellently as a benchmark ball on fresh lanes. Its combination of low RG and a tacky surface makes it an ideal choice for controlling the heads and finding the pocket reliably, without the ball jumping unpredictably. It particularly shines at smoothing out the transition from wet to dry areas (wet/dry). If you throw the ball fast, it's a dependable partner, because it slows down early enough. But as soon as the lane goes into transition and the heads break down, the aggressive coverstock may burn up energy too early, which makes a move to a polished ball like the Iron Forge or Pride Empire advisable. It's a workhorse for volume and control.
