First Impressions
Popular in 1996, the AMF Focus Reactive Blue is a classic representative of the "entry-level" reactive balls of the mid-90s. Visually it comes in a deep, shimmering blue (often executed as a pearl finish), which sets it apart from its solid red sister model. Technically, this ball was developed to make the benefits of reactive technology accessible to recreational bowlers and beginners without the hard-to-control aggressiveness of the high-performance balls. Inside works a traditional three-piece pancake weight block (high RG, low differential). This construction provides extremely stable rotation and minimized flare (track flare). The coverstock consists of a mild reactive blend, polished at the factory to help the ball glide effortlessly through the heads and respond to friction only late.
Comparison
Compared directly to the AMF Focus Reactive Red, which was already on the market earlier, the Blue is noticeably longer and more defined. While the Focus Red (solid) reads earlier and describes a rounder arc, the Focus Reactive Blue uses its pearl surface for more skid in the front part of the lane and a somewhat sharper snap at the breakpoint. Compared to the top models of the day such as the AMF RPM Ultra/C, the Focus Reactive Blue is far tamer and covers considerably fewer boards. It plays in the same league as the Columbia 300 Scout Reactive or the Brunswick Rhino Pro Teal: a ball that generates length and reliably finds the pocket without immediately overreacting on dry heads.
On the Lanes
By today's standards, the AMF Focus Reactive Blue is an absolute specialist for dry lanes or burned-up conditions (late shift). Its ideal range of use is when stronger balls lose energy too early or go through the nose uncontrollably. Thanks to the weak core and the polished shell, it almost completely ignores the oil in the heads. It works excellently for beginners who want to learn how to hook the ball, since it forgives mistakes at release, or for advanced players as a "strike ball for the desert" when there is hardly any oil left on the lane late in the session. For heavy oil it is entirely unsuitable, since it would mostly just skid straight there and would not develop sufficient energy transfer (carry).
