First Impressions
The Storm Fire PhysiX is a sought-after overseas release that adds a dynamic component to the extremely popular PhysiX series. Visually it lives up to its name with a fiery combination of red, orange and black. At its heart remains the phenomenal Atomic Core, an asymmetric design that at 15 lbs shows a 2.48 RG, a 0.053 differential and a 0.017 intermediate differential. This core is known for revving up extremely quickly and for its stability. The cover here is the NRG-2 Pearl Reactive coverstock, finished with a 1500-grit polish. That choice is decisive: NRG-2 is a "nano" cover that, despite the pearl blend and the polish, retains a microscopic traction. The result is not a ball that skids forever, but one that keeps noticeable traction in the oil despite the shine and rolls heavy into the pins.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Storm Proton PhysiX, the absolute "hook monster" of the series with its rough solid shell, the Fire PhysiX offers considerably more length and saves its energy for the back part of the lane. It is not as "slippery" as the historic Storm Astro PhysiX (R2S Pearl), though. Where the Astro often reacted very aggressively to dry backends ("skid-flip"), the Fire PhysiX reads the midlane earlier thanks to the NRG-2 shell and offers a rounder, more controlled motion. In its philosophy it resembles the Storm Infinite PhysiX (ReX Pearl), but the NRG-2 material often makes it feel a touch earlier and fuller in its roll. It closes the gap between the big "snow tires" and the thinner pearl balls.
On the Lanes
The Storm Fire PhysiX is an excellent choice for medium to heavier oil conditions. It is not a ball for bone-dry lanes, since the strong Atomic core would burn up too much energy there. Its specialty is playing the transition: if you started with a Proton PhysiX or Reality and the heads start to break down, the Fire PhysiX is the logical next step. It gets through the heads cleaner but has enough "teeth" (traction) not to float in the remaining oil through the midlane. It lets you move deep inside, because it has enough torque to knock out the corner pins with authority even from wide angles (carry).
