First Impressions
Released in May 2022, the Big Bowling EXP'24 (often also called the EXP 24 Urethane) is a specialized release designed primarily for the international market. Visually the ball deliberately holds back, showing up in a classic solid black that immediately recalls the urethane era of the 1980s. Technically, this ball marks Big Bowling's entry into the "traditional urethane" segment. Inside sits the Simple Idea Symmetric Core. With a 2.540 RG and a moderate 0.035 differential (at 15 lbs), this symmetric core delivers numbers that sit somewhat higher than many classic urethane options, which helps it generate length. The cover is a genuine urethane solid material (not a "urethane-like" reactive) and comes out of the box with a coarse 1000 sanded finish. This combination of textured surface and stable core signals right away: maximum control and an early read of the lane are the priorities here.
Comparison
The most obvious comparison is the leader in this segment, the Storm Pitch Black. Both balls aim for a controllable, straighter reaction. The EXP'24 differs through its core, though: the Simple Idea Core has a higher differential (0.035) than the Pitch Black's Capacitor Core (0.022), which allows the Big Bowling ball to create a bit more flare and go through the pins more dynamically. Compared to the Hammer Purple Hammer (pearl urethane), the EXP'24 is clearly weaker in overall hook and reacts earlier. Where the Purple Hammer often still makes a visible change of direction at the end of the pattern, the EXP'24 stays true to its line and offers a smoother arc. It is stronger than a pure polyester ball, but considerably tamer than modern urethane hybrids like the Storm IQ Tour 78/U.
On the Lanes
The Big Bowling EXP'24 is an absolute specialty weapon for short oil patterns, "Wolf"-type conditions or extremely dry backends. Its strength lies in predictability: it eliminates the overreaction that modern reactive balls show on high-friction lanes. It is ideal for controlling the heads and playing the pocket straight up the outside boards. Since this is traditional urethane, it doesn't burn up but instead offers a very even roll into the pocket. One important practical note: like many true urethane balls, the EXP'24 tends to soak up oil ("sweating"), which is why regular cleaning of the surface is essential to keep the reaction consistent. It's the perfect choice if you just want to hit the pocket on difficult sport patterns without having to worry about an uncontrollable hook.
