First Impressions
The Dyno-Thane Energy was introduced in the mid-2000s as a high-performance model and stands out with its striking Ultra Violet design. The technical heart of the ball is the POP Core, which stands for Polar Opposite Powerblocks. This symmetrical core carries an RG of 2.52 and a very high differential of 0.060, pointing to enormous flare potential and a strong overall motion. This core is wrapped in the Pearl Soaker ATC, the so-called All Terrain Cover. This surface was given a 600 grit wet sand finish at the factory and then polished, in order to create a balance between skid through the heads and traction in the back part of the lane. The cover is considered an evolution of the proven Soaker technology and should provide improved durability as well as versatility.
Comparison
Within the Dyno-Thane hierarchy, the Energy slots in as a somewhat more aggressive and stronger-reacting option compared to the Dyno-Thane The Thing, showing noticeably more motion off the backend and improved carry. Compared to contemporary classics from other manufacturers, such as the Storm Phaze II, the Energy shows a slightly longer skid phase through the heads before the high differential takes hold at the breakpoint. While a Storm Phaze II is known for its controlled, steady reaction, the Dyno-Thane Energy tends to save more energy for the backend. Compared to the Ebonite V2 Sweet, the Energy uses an almost identical core setup, but pairs it with the more aggressive Pearl Soaker surface, which gives it more friction potential on oilier conditions than the Ebonite counterpart.
On the Lanes
The Dyno-Thane Energy is designed primarily for medium to heavier oil conditions. Thanks to the high differential, the ball shows a pronounced willingness to change direction as soon as it reaches the end of the oil. In practice, this should deliver an explosive hook and a flat, powerful entry into the pocket. Strokers and tweeners benefit especially from the controllable yet still strong down-lane motion, while if you have a very high rev rate you may need to adjust the surface slightly to keep the ball from breaking too early. In situations with a lot of carrydown, the ball shows remarkable consistency and helps bridge the transition on the lane effectively. It is ideally used when clean travel through the heads is required without giving up a massive down-lane reaction.
