First Impressions
The Storm DNA Strand was introduced in August 2024 as an international release and expands the successful DNA series with another pearl variant. The Capri/White/Graphite color scheme gives the ball a fresh, maritime look, while the characteristic Cream Soda scent continues the Storm tradition. Inside works the proven Supercoil core, whose asymmetric design with its mass concentration around the equator produces a low RG value. The technical data show an RG of 2.47 (15 lbs) or 2.53 (14 lbs), a differential of 0.053 (15 lbs) or 0.048 (14 lbs), and a mass bias of roughly 0.020 to 0.023. These numbers point to a ball that revs up quickly with high flare potential. As a special feature, the DNA Strand uses the NEX Pearl Reactive coverstock, a further development of the proven NRG coverstock with nano additives. The factory setup with 1500 grit polished and Reacta Gloss finish positions the ball as a longer, cleaner alternative within the DNA family for medium to heavy oil conditions.
Comparison
The DNA Strand joins Storm's DNA series, which began with the original DNA (EXO Solid, 2000 Abralon) and was expanded with the DNA Coil (EXO Pearl, Reacta Gloss). Compared to the DNA Coil, which already impressed as a pearl version with EXO coverstock, the DNA Strand brings a more modern coverstock formulation with NEX Pearl technology. According to Storm, the NEX technology promises 11% more entry angle and 9.6% more overall hook after 50 shots compared to fresh NRG cover, along with better midlane readability without losing backend reaction. While the DNA Coil became known for its early midlane read and controlled pearl reaction, the DNA Strand should offer somewhat more midlane traction through the NEX Pearl cover with similarly clean performance through the heads. Compared to the original DNA with its aggressive EXO Solid coverstock, the DNA Strand positions itself as a considerably longer option with more angular backend motion. Within the Storm Premier lineup, the DNA Strand could slot between the strong asymmetrics such as Storm's PhysiX Blackout (also with NEX Pearl) and more controllable options, with the Supercoil core giving it a characteristic, early-revving dynamic.
On the Lanes
The DNA Strand was designed for medium to heavy oil conditions, with the combination of the Supercoil core's low RG and the advanced NEX Pearl surface intended to allow an interesting balance between early rev-up and clean length. The Supercoil core's mass distribution around the equator drives the RG down and should provide a better midlane read, which allows the ball to start hooking before the end of the pattern — a trait many bowlers worldwide appreciate. The NEX Pearl formulation with Reacta Gloss finish promises more length than the EXO Pearl version of the DNA Coil, while the chemical porosity and friction should still be greater than on average pearl balls. This is meant to avoid unexpected over/under reactions and keep the ball forgiving, while it reads the midlane better than most other pearl options. For bowlers who had success with the original DNA, Storm recommends using the same layout on the DNA Strand to achieve consistent early rev-up with a longer, more angular ball path when the lanes start to break down. The ball should be particularly suited if you appreciate the early reaction and strong backend of the DNA series but need more length through the heads. Its international availability makes it an attractive option for bowlers outside the USA who want Storm Premier performance at an often lower price than the US releases. As an overseas ball, the DNA Strand is USBC approved for regular play. The combination of the proven Supercoil core and state-of-the-art NEX Pearl technology should give the DNA Strand a unique position in the arsenal — reading early, but with enough length for transition and later use in the block.
