First Impressions
Released in October 2018, the Ebonite Destiny Hybrid has big shoes to fill, as it was designed as the direct successor to the legendary Cyclone series. At the heart of the ball works the proven Cyclone Torque core, a symmetrical design that delivers impressive numbers for this price segment. With a 2.53 RG and a very high differential of 0.053 (at 15 lbs), the Destiny Hybrid offers considerably more flare potential than most other balls in the entry-level range. This core is wrapped in the GB 11.2 Hybrid Reactive coverstock, a further development of the Game Breaker chemistry. The factory finish, consisting of a 500/1000 Abralon sand followed by Powerhouse Factory Finish polish, gives the ball in Purple/Platinum/Black a glossy look that promises easy length through the heads, paired with an aggressive reaction on dry boards.
Comparison
Compared directly to its predecessor, the Ebonite Cyclone, the Destiny Hybrid shows a noticeable step up in performance. While the core stayed the same, the upgrade from the GB 10.7 (Cyclone) to the GB 11.2 Hybrid shell provides better hold in oil and a stronger overall reaction without sacrificing the easy length. Bringing in a competitor, the Destiny Hybrid positions itself considerably more aggressively than a Storm Tropical Surge. While the Tropical Surge is intended more for very dry lanes and controlled play, the Destiny Hybrid's high differential (0.053 vs. 0.024 on the Surge) allows for much more direction change and hook potential. It plays more at the level of a Roto Grip Hustle, but thanks to the stronger core it often offers a bit more backend motion.
On the Lanes
The Ebonite Destiny Hybrid is the ideal ball for light to medium oil conditions. If you're a beginner buying your first reactive ball, it offers unbeatable value for the money, since it generates enough hook to teach you how modern bowling balls work without being hard to control. For advanced tournament players, it's an excellent option for burned-up lanes or late squads. When stronger balls lose energy too early and carry suffers, the Destiny Hybrid's polish and high RG let it get through the heads cleanly and save energy for the pins. It is not suited for heavy oil, though, as the polish would make it slide too far there.
