First Impressions
The 900 Global Desert Ops was released in January 2017 as part of the "Ops" line and immediately stands out visually with its complete, single-color gold design ("Gold Solid"). Technically, the ball is based on the proven symmetric Breakneck Core, which was already used in the popular Black Ops. In the 15-pound version, this core delivers a high RG of 2.52 and a moderate differential of 0.041. Those numbers point to natural length and a delayed energy release. This core is paired with the S70 Solid coverstock. The special part here is the finish: even though it is a solid material, the ball comes out of the box with a 1500 grit polish. This unusual combination of solid cover and polish aims to unite the controllability of a solid with the length of a pearl.
Comparison Compared directly to its legendary predecessor, the 900 Global Black Ops (hybrid), the Desert Ops shows a somewhat smoother reaction at the breakpoint. While the Black Ops was known for its extreme skid/flip character, the Desert Ops uses the S70 Solid cover to blend the over/under reaction on tricky lanes better without hooking early. Compared to the Storm Hy-Road, which also has a high RG core and a polished surface, the Desert Ops offers similar length through the heads, but reads the midlane slightly stronger because of the solid component, which makes its motion a bit rounder. Next to a straight pearl ball like the Roto Grip Wreck-Em, the Desert Ops looks less jumpy when it hits dry boards, which gives it an advantage on spotty oil patterns.
On the Lanes As the name already suggests, the 900 Global Desert Ops is a specialty weapon for drier lane conditions or heavily played oil patterns ("fried lanes"). Thanks to the high RG of the Breakneck Core, the ball ignores burned-up heads effortlessly and saves its energy for the backend. The polished solid surface is ideal for situations where pearl balls react too sensitively to the friction ("jumpy") and dull balls burn up energy too early. It works very well for the late tournament block or the second and third game of league play, when you are forced to move well left and cover a lot of ground. The ball generates enough length to get through the dry heads, but thanks to the solid base it offers a controllable, arcing hook into the pocket that maximizes carry without jumping away unpredictably.
