First Impressions
The DV8 Dark Side Curse takes the stage as the newest addition to DV8's "no-thumb" optimized line, developed specifically for the needs of modern playing styles. Visually, the ball comes in a deep "Burgundy/Red" color scheme that radiates a certain seriousness right there on the shelf. Under the hood works the new "Duality" core, a symmetric core that nevertheless features the patented technology we already know from the Trouble Maker series for optimizing layouts without a thumb hole. With a 2.480 RG and a 0.036 differential (at 15 lbs), the engine sits in the low-RG range but offers controlled flare potential. This core is wrapped in the "Inciter Solid" coverstock. Despite the "Solid" designation, the ball does not come out of the box dull, but with a "500, 1000, 1500 Siaair / Crown Factory Compound" finish. This combination of a strong cover material and a shiny surface should deliver an interesting mix of traction and length.
Comparison
Compared directly to the rest of the DV8 lineup, the Dark Side Curse positions itself as the more controlled, "quieter" companion to the original Dark Side (Hybrid). While balls like the "Crown Victory" or the "Hater" are often known for a drastic change of direction at the breakpoint, the Dark Side Curse behaves noticeably more smoothly. Its motion characteristics recall a classic benchmark ball, but with a modern twist for higher rev rates. Compared to the "Attention Star S2 from Roto Grip", which is known for its quick responsiveness to friction, the Curse offers a considerably rounder arc and less jumpiness when it overreacts. It fills the gap for bowlers who need the traction of a solid cover but are looking for the energy retention of a polished surface so the ball doesn't burn up energy too early in the heads.
On the Lanes
The ideal use for the Dark Side Curse is medium oil conditions and situations where the lane is starting to move into the transition phase. The compound finish lets the ball glide cleanly through the heads, but thanks to the Inciter Solid cover it reads the midlane early enough not to slide "out of bounds". That makes it an excellent choice for two-handers or if you have a high rev rate and often struggle to get the ball far enough down the lane without it starting up too early. The ball generates a stable, controllable hook that doesn't go off explosively but runs continuously through the pocket. This improves carry considerably on less-than-perfect hits. When the lane gets "spotty" or offers too much friction, this ball should be the first choice to regain control over the boards without giving up hitting power at the pins.
