First Impressions
The Roto Grip Dare Devil Danger was released in November 2017 as the third addition to the popular Dare Devil series within the HP3 line. Visually, the ball comes in a lively color blend of red, orange and blue. Technically, this model combines the proven symmetrical Madcap core with the Psyched Hybrid Reactive coverstock. The Madcap core is considered one of the strongest-rolling symmetrical cores in the manufacturer's portfolio, and in a 15-pound ball it carries a low 2.48 RG along with a moderate 0.041 differential. The coverstock consists of two parts pearl and one part solid components, and ships from the factory with a 1500-grit polished finish. These specs should allow for a balance between skid through the heads and a controlled but still powerful reaction at the breakpoint.
Comparison Within the series, the Dare Devil Danger closes the gap between the original Dare Devil (Pearl) and the Dare Devil Trick (Solid). Compared to the Dare Devil Trick, which reads noticeably earlier in the midlane with its dull 2000-grit surface and shows a more arcing motion, the Danger offers more length and a sharper angle in the backend thanks to its polished hybrid cover. Compared to the original Dare Devil, however, the hybrid version responds to friction a few feet earlier because of the solid content in the cover, which smooths out the motion at the breakpoint somewhat relative to the pure pearl version and makes it more predictable. Compared to the Storm Phaze II, the Dare Devil Danger runs cleaner through the heads, but shows a similarly stable roll phase once it reaches the end of the oil pattern thanks to the Madcap core. It therefore offers more aggressiveness in the backend than a classic benchmark ball, while remaining more controlled than extreme flip balls.
On the Lanes The Roto Grip Dare Devil Danger is designed primarily for medium oil conditions and is meant to serve as a versatile all-arounder. Through the combination of an early-rolling core and a hybrid cover, it is an excellent fit if you're looking for a consistent reaction on typical house shots. It should ensure that the ball retains enough energy for carry without reacting too sensitively to drier spots in the heads. In practice, the ball lets you move your line slightly inside as the transition sets in, since it reacts reliably to friction and creates a strong entry angle into the pocket. It's an ideal tool if you appreciate the stability of a solid ball but need the punch and angle of a pearl surface. Even on moderate sport patterns, the ball's predictable angularity makes it a reliable option for navigating the lane transition precisely.
