First Impressions
With the Covert VIP EXJ, Motiv is releasing a limited special edition honoring EJ Tackett's fourth PBA Player of the Year title (2025, his third in a row). Visually, the ball comes across as solid black, though technically that color grows out of a deep purple — a subtle quirk that only becomes apparent on second glance in direct light. The presentation skips flashy logos on the cover surface, which makes it look restrained, almost plain. The edition references the original Covert Revolt from the Motiv lineup of roughly twelve years ago and carries over its core, paired with a modern cover formula. Technically, the 14, 15 and 16 pound weights use the Vanquish Symmetrical Core, which with a 2.47 RG and a 0.056 differential should offer a comparatively high flare potential of more than five inches. In the lighter 12 and 13 pound weights, Motiv uses the symmetrical Quadfire Core. The core is wrapped in the new Leverage HFS Reactive Solid cover, finished at the factory with 4000 grit LSS. The manufacturer's numbers place the ball at Length 67, Hook 75 and Backend 81 — figures that point to a controlled overall motion with a defined backend. Motiv lists medium-heavy oil as the preferred environment.
Comparison Within the Motiv lineup, the Covert VIP EXJ slots in between the Motiv Jackal Onyx and the Motiv Nebula. In a direct comparison, the Jackal Onyx shows a somewhat stronger overall motion with a slightly earlier reaction, while the Covert VIP EXJ should run cleaner through the heads and deliver a more defined, somewhat steeper backend. Against the Black Venom, which uses a related version of the Leverage cover, the Covert VIP EXJ should position itself as the stronger option thanks to the noticeably higher differential and the stronger Vanquish core — the Black Venom stays longer and reacts more linearly overall. The Venom Shock, also from the more recent generation, comes out cleaner due to its lower differential and suits drier conditions. Compared to the Motiv Primal Ghost, the Covert VIP EXJ is longer and more reactive at the transition into the backend, while the Primal Ghost works earlier and smoother. The original Covert Revolt with its Turmoil HFS cover runs noticeably earlier in a direct comparison — behavior that Motiv specifically wanted to adapt to more modern, heavier oil conditions with the reworked Leverage HFS cover. Among the competition, the Covert VIP EXJ should operate in a similar performance class as the Storm Phaze II or the Roto Grip Hustle Camo, though the Covert VIP EXJ should tend to show more friction reaction at the breakpoint due to its high flare potential.
On the Lanes The Covert VIP EXJ is aimed at bowlers looking for a controllable benchmark ball for medium-heavy conditions. The combination of a high differential and the Leverage HFS cover at 4000 grit should provide enough length through the heads while still building strong friction in the midlane without reacting too abruptly. If you have a moderate to higher rev rate and average ball speed, you're most likely to benefit from this characteristic, since the ball can use the forward roll of the core without overreacting. If you throw the ball very fast, you might benefit from taking the surface down to about 2000 grit to set the reaction earlier, while if you are very rev-dominant, you may want to polish the ball slightly or move to longer lane conditions. In a classic arsenal, the Covert VIP EXJ works as a second or third ball — for example below a Motiv Jackal Onyx or Motiv Raptor Reign and above a Motiv Nebula or Motiv Venom Shock. On house conditions with fresh oil it should offer a wide margin at the breakpoint, while on sport patterns it could allow a controlled line through the midlane. Given the limited nature of the edition, reserving one early at your pro shop is advisable.
