First Impressions
The 900 Global Compass was released in February 2017 as part of the Tour Preferred 700 Series and shows up in a striking color combination of Black Sparkle and Red Pearl. Technically, the ball is built around the symmetrical Longitude Core, which was designed for controlled energy release. In a 15-pound ball, this core carries an RG of 2.47 and a differential of 0.050. This combination provides stable roll through the midlane without losing energy prematurely. The core is wrapped in the S70 Hybrid Cover, finished at the factory with 4000 Abralon. This surface should deliver a balanced relationship between skid phase and traction, with the hybrid material combining the advantages of solid and pearl characteristics to ensure predictable motion into the backend.
Comparison In practical terms, the 900 Global Compass compares most closely to balls considered benchmark options for medium conditions. Compared to the Storm IQ Tour, the Compass offers slightly stronger backend motion thanks to its higher differential, while retaining similar controllability through the heads. Against the Storm Phaze II, the Compass shows a less aggressive reaction in the midlane, which makes it a stable alternative once the lanes begin to dry up. Compared to the Roto Grip Idol as well, the S70 Hybrid Cover makes the Compass a bit longer and less prone to rolling out too early on broken-down oil patterns. It therefore slots in between the very reactive high-performance balls and the pure control pieces, which makes it a versatile tool for the transition.
On the Lanes The 900 Global Compass is designed primarily for medium oil volumes and, according to the manufacturer, should play to its strengths especially on typical house shots (THS). The main focus is on its ability to effectively bridge the so-called wet-dry ratio, meaning the strong contrast between the oily middle and the drier outside boards. If you prefer a more direct line up the outside boards, the ball offers enough friction to drive steadily into the pocket. At the same time, if you have a higher rev rate, it lets you open up the lane and cross more boards without the ball reacting uncontrollably at the breakpoint. During transition, as the oil in the heads thins out, the Compass should provide a clean transition without giving up carry potential to friction in the heads. It is therefore very well suited as the first ball out of the bag or as a stable follow-up when more aggressive solid balls react too early.
