First Impressions
Released in February 2026, the Brunswick Combat Hybrid presents itself as a tactical evolution within the Combat series, one that immediately catches the eye with its striking color combination of Black, Purple, Green and Lime. Technically, this high-performance ball is built around the proven asymmetric Rampart core that was already used in the original Combat. In the 15-pound reference weight, this core carries an RG of 2.502, a differential of 0.051 and an intermediate differential of 0.019. Those numbers point to a core that revs up early and builds strong momentum without ever feeling uncontrollable. A key differentiator on this model is the choice of coverstock. Brunswick deliberately goes with the Alpha Premier Hybrid formulation here and explicitly skips the widely used HK22 technology. That decision is meant to offer an alternative to the extremely quick-responding coverstocks and to create a more classic, more controlled ball reaction. Out of the box, the ball comes with a coarse 500/2000 Siaair Micro Pad finish, which underlines the intent to generate traction in the oil rather than skid through the heads. Construction-wise, the ball features DynamiCore2 technology, a thickened outer shell that should increase durability and improve carry through optimized energy transfer into the pins. It also uses DOT technology (Durability Optimization Technology), which allows for freer layout placement and should minimize the risk of cracking.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Brunswick Combat, the Combat Hybrid comes across as the controlled, earlier-reading counterpart. Where the original Combat was often known for an angular move at the breakpoint and plenty of length, the Hybrid was developed to smooth out the gap and read the lane earlier. By passing on the HK22 base, the Combat Hybrid differs noticeably from other current balls in the Brunswick lineup such as the Mesmerize or the Vaporize, which are designed for a lightning-quick response to friction. In its motion characteristics it is closer to balls like the Hypnotize or the Paragon Shadow, though it positions itself slightly below those outright heavy-oil monsters as a more versatile option. The motion is often described as "round" and "continuous," which sets it apart from so-called "skid-flip" balls. It does not offer the abrupt direction change of a pure pearl, but it also avoids the "hook-stop" phenomenon in which the ball loses energy too quickly after changing direction. Compared to an Ethos, the Combat Hybrid feels a bit more defined at the breakpoint thanks to the asymmetric core, but its overall motion stays similarly smooth. It therefore serves as an ideal link between the strongest solids for heavy oil and the shiny pearls for dry lanes, combining benchmark-ball qualities with asymmetric dynamics.
On the Lanes
The Brunswick Combat Hybrid is designed primarily for medium to heavier oil patterns and fresh lane conditions. Because of the dull 2000 surface and the strong hybrid cover, the ball needs a certain amount of oil in the heads and the midlane so it doesn't burn up its energy too early. It works excellently as the first ball out of the bag (benchmark ball), letting you read the lane and smooth over inconsistencies in the oil pattern. Its greatest strength lies in controlling the transition: as the lane starts to change, the Combat Hybrid should help blend the area between the wet oil and the dry outside boards ("blending the pattern") instead of overreacting to dry spots. If you have a higher rev rate, this ball gives you the security to play deeper angles without worrying that the ball will shoot past the breakpoint or hook too early. If you are more speed dominant, keep in mind that the dull surface and the early-revving core could make the backend reaction come out a little flatter with too much speed; adjusting the surface to a higher grit or polishing it could help here. In league play and on demanding sport patterns, the Combat Hybrid serves to hit the pocket in a controlled way and to convert hook potential into a forward-rolling motion, which should improve carry on less than perfect hits. It is less suited to situations where the lanes are already heavily broken down and extreme angles across the full width of the lane are required, since it lacks the explosive backend snap for that.
