First Impressions
The Storm Code Zero, released in October 2017 as an exclusive international (overseas) release, builds on the proven platform of the highly successful Code series. Inside works the extremely torque-heavy RAD4 core (Radial Accelerating Disc), which offers massive asymmetry with a 2.50 RG and a 0.058 differential (at 15 lbs). This core is wrapped in the legendary R2S Pearl Reactive coverstock, finished at the factory with a 1500-grit polish. Visually, the ball comes in a combination of purple, white and copper. The technical specs mark it as an absolute skid-flip monster: clean glide through the heads and an explosive reaction at the end of the oil pattern.
Comparison
Technically, the Code Zero is the twin of the extremely popular Storm Code Black from the US market. Both share the same core and the same R2S Pearl cover. Head to head, the Code Zero accordingly behaves almost identically: it offers maximum length and one of the strongest direction changes in the backend Storm has ever produced. Against the Storm Code Red (hybrid), the Code Zero shows a bit more length and a sharper reaction to friction, while the Code Red reads the midlane somewhat earlier and moves more roundly. Compared to a Roto Grip Hyper Cell Fused, the Code Zero seems even quicker through the heads and faster in its reaction, which makes it the better choice when you need to open up the lane wide.
On the Lanes
The Storm Code Zero is predestined for medium to heavy oil conditions, though there has to be a defined dry phase in the backend. It's the ideal ball when symmetric balls or dull asymmetric balls start losing energy too early. Thanks to the R2S Pearl cover, it glides effortlessly over played-in heads and saves all of its rotation for the impact. If you like playing deep angles and sending the ball from left to right across the boards (for right-handers), you'll find a perfect partner here. It's less suited to extremely fresh or very long oil patterns, where it could potentially slide too far (over/under reaction), but it shines as soon as transition sets in and you have to open up the pocket.
