First Impressions
Released in May 2022 (primarily as an international/overseas release), the Storm Code Master brings one of the most legendary core series back to the lanes. Visually, the ball comes in a classy, dark combination of "Obsidian/Sapphire/Orchid" that really stands out thanks to the polished finish. Inside works the famous RAD4 Core (Radial Accelerating Disc). This asymmetric core is a technical heavyweight with a 2.50 RG, an extremely high 0.058 differential and a strong 0.020 intermediate differential (at 15 lbs). What makes this edition special is the cover: Storm pairs the rev-happy core with the NeX Pearl Reactive coverstock (Nano Extreme). This cover has noticeably more traction than conventional pearl blends. Out of the box, the ball comes with a 1500-grit polished finish and the "Apple Crisp" fragrance.
Comparison
The inevitable comparison is to the cult ball Storm Code Black. While both use the aggressive RAD4 core, they differ massively in the cover. The Code Black used R2S Pearl, which gave it extreme length and a very hard "snap." The Code Master, on the other hand, uses NeX Pearl (known from the Axiom Pearl), a cover based on nanotechnology. That means the Code Master reads the lane in the midlane noticeably earlier and more stably than the Code Black. It doesn't skid as far through the oil but anchors earlier, which makes the reaction a bit more rounded, yet overall more powerful on oilier lanes. Compared to the Storm Dark Code (which used ReX Pearl), the Code Master behaves similarly, though the NeX cover tends to offer a bit more traction ("teeth") in oil and reacts less sensitively to carrydown.
On the Lanes
The Storm Code Master is an excellent choice for medium-heavy to medium oil. It fills the gap when a classic pearl ball (like a Hy-Road or Phaze V) skids too far, but a sanded solid loses energy too early. Thanks to the nano particles in the NeX Pearl cover, it doesn't simply ignore light traces of oil in the heads but builds traction, while the polish keeps enough energy for an explosive backend. It is ideal if you like to "twist" the ball and play big angles but need the security that the ball won't skid through the breakpoint. When the lane gets "tight" over the course of a series (carrydown), the aggressive cover of the Code Master helps it still find the necessary friction.
