First Impressions
The Motiv Carbide Tank shows up in a plain but functional grey ("Gunmetal Grey") that immediately underlines this ball's "tool" character. Inside works the legendary symmetric Gear core, the same one that drives the famous Venom Shock. At 15 lbs this core delivers a low 2.48 RG and a moderate 0.034 differential. The technological spearhead, though, is the coverstock: Motiv uses the Frixion M4 Solid Microcell Polymer (MCP) shell here. Unlike classic urethane, this material is chemically engineered to absorb oil while still imitating the controlled motion of urethane. Out of the box the ball comes with an aggressive 1000 grit LSS finish. This combination produces an extremely early read of the lane and eliminates nearly any skid in the heads.
Comparison
Compared directly to the 900 Global Zen U, which also plays in this modern "urethane-like" category, the Carbide Tank moves noticeably earlier and rounder. While the Zen U still shows a certain snappiness at the breakpoint ("pop"), the Carbide Tank smooths the ball path out completely. Against the Motiv Blue Tank, the Carbide is substantially stronger in overall hook and handles considerably more oil volume. The comparison to the Purple Hammer is interesting: the Carbide Tank offers more traction in the front part of the lane and is less prone to carrydown, since the MCP shell actually takes in the oil. It behaves like a super-strong Venom Shock that doesn't react angularly but instead arcs to the pocket.
On the Lanes
The Motiv Carbide Tank is the ultimate weapon for difficult sport patterns and conditions where control beats everything else. It shines on short to medium oil patterns or on lanes with extremely harsh wet/dry edges. Its strength is taking the overreaction at the end of the pattern completely out of play. If you're speed-dominant, it's often strong enough to serve as your main ball on house shots, since it gets into a roll early enough. Rev-dominant players use it to control the pocket on fresh oil without having to worry about an unpredictable jump at the breakpoint. It's the problem solver when reactive balls are too jumpy and classic urethane doesn't carry enough corner pins.
