First Impressions
The 900Global Boost Emerald/Gold immediately stands out with its lively emerald green and gold color scheme, making it a real highlight on the shelf among entry-level balls. Technically this ball sits in the "dry lane / entry level" segment, but it offers surprisingly potent numbers for that class. Inside works the Launch Symmetric core, which provides plenty of length with a high 2.54 RG, but delivers considerably more flare potential than many direct competitors thanks to a 0.043 differential (at 15 lbs). This core is wrapped in the S43 Pearl Reactive coverstock, finished at the factory with a 1500 grit polish. This combination of a hard, polished shell and a rev-friendly core lets the ball glide effortlessly through the heads ("skid") and show a defined, almost aggressive reaction ("snap") at the breakpoint.
Comparison
Compared directly to the nearly simultaneously released 900Global After Dark Pearl (Blue/Silver), the Boost Emerald/Gold shows noticeably more dynamics. While the After Dark behaves extremely controlled and calm with its very low differential (0.030), the Boost generates more direction change and covers more boards thanks to its 0.043 differential. Set against a Storm Tropical Surge, the Boost is noticeably stronger on the backend and is more forgiving if you throw the ball a bit farther outside, since it comes back more reliably. Against a Roto Grip Hustle Ink, the Boost is often a bit more angular and offers more length thanks to the S43 Pearl blend, while the Hustle reads earlier and rounder. It is basically a "super entry" ball that nearly reaches the performance of lower mid-performance balls.
On the Lanes
The 900Global Boost Emerald/Gold is the ideal choice for two specific groups. First, it's an excellent first reactive ball if you're a beginner learning to throw a hook, since it offers enough length not to become uncontrollable, but makes enough move on the backend to hit the pins effectively. Second, it's a secret weapon for tournament players on burned-up lanes. When the heads are dry and stronger balls lose energy too early, the Boost glides cleanly through the front part of the lane and uses its stored energy for a strong kick into the pocket. It does, however, need dry boards on the backend (friction) to work; on fresh, long oil it will often remain ineffective for lack of traction in the heads.
