First Impressions
Released in May 2022, the Motiv Blue Tank marks the return of the unique "Microcell Polymer" (MCP) technology, which Motiv positions as a third option between urethane and reactive. Visually, the ball comes in a rich "Blue Pearl," with the surface finished at the factory to a very coarse 1000 grit LSS. This combination of a pearl mixture and a sanded surface is unusual. Inside works the Halogen V2 Core. This symmetrical core has an extremely high RG of 2.59 and a low differential of 0.023 (at 15 lbs). An RG value that high is rare, and mechanically it means the ball stores energy for a very long time and glides effortlessly through the heads, while the low differential minimizes flare to create an extremely controlled, smooth motion.
Comparison
The most important benchmark for this ball is the Motiv Purple Tank (Urethane). Head to head, the Blue Tank shows noticeably more length thanks to its much higher RG value (2.59 vs. 2.48 on the Purple Tank). Where the Purple Tank, as a classic urethane, reads the lane very early and often starts working already in the heads, the Blue Tank pushes further through the front boards before it reacts. Compared to a reactive ball for dry lanes, such as the Motiv Top Thrill, the Blue Tank offers a much smoother and more predictable reaction ("Smooth Motion") and avoids the hard snap at the breakpoint. Performance-wise it sits right in that niche: it gives more length than a Storm Pitch Black, but more control and less angle than a Motiv Venom Shock.
On the Lanes
The Motiv Blue Tank is a specialty solution for short oil patterns, burned-up lanes, or conditions with extreme friction in the heads. It is ideal if you have a high rev rate (rev-dominant) and struggle to get the ball far enough down the lane because conventional urethane hooks too early. The MCP shell has the advantage that, unlike pure urethane ("urethane carry"), it mixes the pins better and transfers energy more efficiently. When the lane is burned up and even weak reactive balls react too jumpy, the Blue Tank provides the calm needed to play into the pocket under control, without rolling out the moment it touches friction.
