First Impressions
The Seismic Blackout Pearl presents itself visually in a classic, elegant Black Pearl color scheme. At the center of the ball works the symmetrical Combustion core. At a reference weight of 15 pounds, this core shows a moderate RG value of 2.54 and a differential of 0.046. Since this is a symmetrical construction, there is no asymmetrical differential. These specs point to a solid but not excessively high flare potential, which lets the core maintain even rotation without releasing its energy too early. The core is wrapped in Seismic's own SF3 Pearl coverstock. This cover comes highly polished out of the box and is designed to reduce friction in the front part of the lane to a minimum. Through the interplay of the medium-high RG value and the smooth surface, the ball glides exceptionally cleanly through the heads. Only when it reaches the drier area at the end of the oil pattern does the surface grab. The design should offer excellent length down the lane, combined with a quick, clearly visible change of direction toward the pins.
Comparison To place the specific ball motion of the Seismic Blackout Pearl precisely, a comparison with other well-known models is helpful. Against the Storm Phaze II, which is considered a benchmark ball with a symmetrical core and a dull solid surface, the Blackout Pearl behaves fundamentally differently. While the Storm Phaze II reads the oil early and produces a very smooth, steady and predictable arc, the Seismic ball pushes the length noticeably farther down the lane and reacts much more angularly at the breakpoint. Compared to the Hammer Black Widow 3.0, a ball with an extremely strong asymmetrical core and a rough finish, the Blackout Pearl shows a considerably calmer passage through the front part of the lane. The Hammer Black Widow 3.0 needs a great deal of oil and generates an enormously early, aggressive hook, which makes it hard to tame on dried-up lanes. The Blackout Pearl, by contrast, uses that dryness for its strong backend. Compared to a modern pearl ball such as the Roto Grip Idol Cosmos, the Blackout Pearl shows similar characteristics in length, though the specific tuning of the Combustion core produces a marginally longer skid phase before the ball transitions into the roll phase.
On the Lanes The Seismic Blackout Pearl is primarily designed for medium to lighter oil patterns as well as for lanes that have already seen a lot of play. When the transition sets in during a tournament, the heads dry up and the oil moves into the back part of the lane, this ball plays to its full strengths. Because of its extremely long skid, it loses no unnecessary power in the front part of the lane. As soon as the ball finds friction at the breakpoint, it develops a pronounced hook that allows a late but very powerful entry angle into the pocket. This promotes excellent carry, since the energy is transferred efficiently to the pin deck. If you have a high rev rate, you'll benefit enormously from the length on offer, because you can play deep lines well across the boards without having to worry about the ball reacting too early. If you have a lower rev rate, you can use the ball very well on drier conditions, but you may struggle to get the ball to stand up in time on fresh oil. In such cases the polished cover slides too easily over the oil, so switching to a ball with more traction is advisable. Overall, the Seismic Blackout Pearl is an excellent choice for later games, when energy retention and a strong backend are required.
