First Impressions
The Hammer Black Widow XR Gold Pearl is an international release that gained wider availability in March 2023 and visually pays homage to the legendary Black Widow Gold from 2017. Technically, however, the golden pearl shell has been upgraded massively: instead of the old Semtex material, the Envy Pearl CFI (Carbon Fiber Infused) coverstock is used here. This cover, finished with 500/1000/1500 Siaair and Crown Factory Compound, wraps around the iconic Gas Mask core (RG 2.50, diff 0.058). The combination of the chemically more aggressive Envy base and the carbon additives results in a modern shell that is more durable and reacts more quickly to friction than earlier Gold models.
Comparison
In a direct comparison with the **Hammer Black Widow Ghost Pearl** (white shell, Aggression Pearl cover), the XR Gold Pearl shows similar length but reacts more drastically at the breakpoint. While the Ghost Pearl can sometimes feel a bit "floaty" in oil, the Envy CFI shell of the XR Gold digs in harder as soon as it touches dry boards and creates a sharper entry angle. Compared to the **Storm Dark Code**, the Black Widow XR Gold Pearl often gets into its rotation somewhat earlier; the Gas Mask core stands up more forcefully than the Dark Code's RAD4 core, which gives the Hammer ball a heavier roll through the pins. Compared with the **Hammer Black Widow 2.0 Hybrid**, the XR Gold Pearl offers more length and a more defined "skid-snap" motion, since it lacks the solid content of the hybrid.
On the Lanes
This ball is an excellent option for opening up the lane once the heads start to dry up, or when you want to create angle right from the start on medium oil patterns. It is not a ball for extreme flood oil, since out of the box it would slide too far there. Its strength lies in the transition: when stronger balls like the Black Widow 2.0 (solid) pick up too early and lose energy, the XR Gold Pearl is the perfect step down. It glides effortlessly over burned-up heads and stores its enormous energy for an explosive backend. Ideal if you like to use the belly of the lane and want to send the ball well out to the right (for right-handers), with the confidence that it will come back reliably.
