First Impressions
Released in May 2025, the Hammer Black Widow Urethane Mint Solid is another addition to the extremely popular Black Widow series, developed specifically for the international market. Visually, the ball is a real eye-catcher: the urethane cover comes in a striking solid mint green that stands out dramatically on the lane. Technically, Hammer combines two worlds here that normally seem to be opposites: the aggressive, asymmetric Gas Mask core (RG 2.50, diff 0.058 at 15 lbs) and a thick, solid urethane shell. This pairing produces physical characteristics that differ greatly from traditional urethane. While classic urethane balls often generate little flare, the strong core of the Black Widow Urethane Mint Solid forces the ball into massive track flare. The factory matte finish creates extremely early traction. The ball reads the lane immediately in the heads and offers incomparable stability without losing the smooth backend motion typical of urethane.
Comparison
Compared directly to the legendary Hammer Purple Hammer Pearl Urethane, the Black Widow Urethane Mint Solid is noticeably more aggressive in the front part of the lane and covers more boards overall. While the Purple Hammer still retains a certain amount of length and describes a round arc, the Mint Solid digs in earlier and uses the power of the Gas Mask core for a stronger direction change through the midlane. A drastic difference shows up in comparison to the Storm Pitch Black: the Pitch Black is a symmetrical low-flare ball that travels very straight. The Black Widow, by contrast, comes across through its high differential almost like a strong reactive ball that simply has the smooth backend characteristics of urethane. Compared to the earlier Hammer Black Widow Pink Urethane, the Mint Solid behaves very similarly, but with its fresh surface it often feels a tick more tractive over the first few meters of the lane.
On the Lanes
The Hammer Black Widow Urethane Mint Solid is a specialty weapon for difficult sport patterns and short to medium oil volumes. It is ideal when reactive balls react too violently to the dry outside boards (over/under) and you need to control the reaction at the breakpoint. Thanks to its enormous flare potential, it offers more hook than any other urethane ball on the market, which allows you to play a bit deeper inside without the ball missing the pocket. It is perfect for maximizing pocket control: the ball hooks early but rolls smoothly into the pocket instead of turning aggressively. On house patterns with plenty of oil in the middle it is often too early and too weak at the pins, but on short tournament patterns it is often unbeatable, since it combines the carry of a reactive ball with the reliability of urethane.
