The Hammer Black Widow Grey Solid Urethane was introduced in July 2024 as an overseas release, adding another color variant with a specific surface preparation to the successful Black Widow Urethane family. The ball combines the legendary urethane solid coverstock with the iconic Gas Mask core, which has been regarded for generations as one of the best-known and most versatile cores in bowling history. The asymmetric Gas Mask core carries a 2.50 RG and a high 0.058 differential in 15 pounds, combined with a 0.016 mass bias differential, which gives it considerable flare potential. The factory surface preparation is 500/1000 Siaair Micro Pad, which creates a noticeably more aggressive texture than many other urethane balls. This combination of true, thick-shell urethane technology and a high-differential asymmetric core should pair the controllability of classic urethane balls with modern hitting power. As part of the Black Widow Urethane series, the Grey Solid represents Hammer's return to the urethane technology of the 1980s, when Hammer — then operating as "Faball Enterprises" — was considered the industry leader in this segment.
Comparison Within the Black Widow Urethane family, the Grey Solid is positioned as the solid version with a specific surface preparation. Compared to the original Hammer Black Widow Urethane, which shipped with a 360/500/500 Abralon finish, the Grey Solid's 500/1000 Siaair is a slightly finer grit, which could in theory produce a bit more length. Hammer's Purple Solid Urethane variant uses a 500/1000/1500 Siaair surface preparation and should therefore be even longer than the Grey Solid. The Black Widow Urethane is described as a stronger urethane ball that, through the combination of the Gas Mask core and the urethane cover, offers more hook potential than traditional symmetric urethane balls such as the Purple Hammer from Hammer or the Black Hammer from Hammer, both of which use the weaker LED core. Unlike the newer 78D-hardness urethane balls such as Hammer's Black Pearl Urethane, which was developed in response to PBA rule changes, the Grey Solid is a classic urethane product without the harder 78D specifications. According to reports, the Black Pearl version shows roughly 2-4 boards less hook than Hammer's Purple Pearl Urethane, while the Black Widow Urethane, thanks to its stronger core, should generate more total hook overall than the LED-core-based urethane balls. Hammer's Black Widow Black Pearl Urethane uses a 500/1000/2000 Siaair surface preparation and is positioned as the pearl version with more length.
On the Lanes The Hammer Black Widow Grey Solid Urethane should show its main strengths on medium to lighter oil conditions and on shorter oil patterns, where the controllability and predictability of urethane is especially valuable. The aggressive 500/1000 Siaair surface preparation should allow the ball to grab early in the midlane and develop the strong, rolling motion typical of solid urethane. Unlike modern reactive balls, which often show a violent reaction at the breakpoint, urethane is meant to offer ultimate control across the entire lane, which makes it particularly interesting for sport patterns and flat lane conditions. The asymmetric Gas Mask core with its high differential gives the ball more flare potential and backend bite than symmetric urethane balls, which could in theory lead to better pin action. If you have a higher rev rate, the ball could be especially effective for keeping control on fresh, short patterns, while if you have a lower rev rate, you may benefit from the extra strength of the Gas Mask core in generating enough hook. Surface adjustment leaves room for fine-tuning here — sanding it more aggressively would create even more early traction, while a finer grit or a light polish could make the ball workable in a bit more oil.
