BOWLING BALL INFOS

First Impressions
Released in May 2022, the Hammer Black Widow Caramel Urethane is an exclusive international release (Overseas) offering one of the most sought-after combinations in modern bowling: the legendary Gas Mask core wrapped in a urethane shell. Visually, the ball comes in a rich "Caramel" color that is immediately recognizable on the lane. Inside works the proven asymmetric Gas Mask core with a 2.50 RG, a very high differential of 0.058 and an intermediate differential of 0.016 (at 15 lbs). These extremely strong core numbers set it fundamentally apart from classic urethane balls. The surface consists of a Urethane Pearl coverstock, which out of the box usually carries a smooth but not high-gloss polished texture (often 2000-grit or similar). This combination aims to unite the early read of urethane with the massive flare potential of the Widow core.
Comparison
The most important point of comparison is the Hammer Purple Hammer, the market leader in the urethane segment. While the Purple Hammer uses a medium-strength core (LED Core) and is known for its extreme controllability, the Black Widow Caramel brings considerably more dynamics into play through the Gas Mask core. It creates noticeably more flare, which means it puts more fresh surface into the oil and therefore generates more overall hook than the Purple Hammer. Compared to the Storm Pitch Black, the Widow Caramel almost feels like a reactive ball, since it actually describes a curve rather than just running straight. Drawing the comparison to the Hammer Black Widow Pink Pearl Urethane (also an Overseas release), both balls share very similar characteristics: they offer the length of urethane pearl through the heads, but the typical Widow bite at the pin deck that weaker-cored urethane balls often lack.
On the Lanes
The Black Widow Caramel Urethane is a specialty weapon for short oil patterns, difficult sport conditions or lanes with extremely aggressive backends (high friction). It is the answer when conventional reactive balls react too unpredictably ("jump") and the reaction needs to be smoothed out, but a normal urethane ball (like the Pitch Black) doesn't deliver enough carry or doesn't throw enough corners. Thanks to the Gas Mask core, it mixes the pins considerably better than classic urethane. It lets you open up the pocket a bit more, since the core has enough motor to bring the ball back without losing the gentle, controllable arc shape typical of urethane. It is not suited, however, for long oil patterns or very high oil volume ("flood"), since the urethane shell wouldn't build enough friction there.
