First Impressions
Released in August 2018, the Hammer Black Widow Black/Gold is one of the most popular additions to the legendary Black Widow line. It pairs the most iconic core in the brand's history, the asymmetric Gas Mask core, with a thoroughly modern shell. At 15 lbs the core produces a 2.50 RG, a massive 0.058 differential and a 0.016 intermediate differential. Those numbers guarantee an enormous change of direction and strong flare. The cover is the Aggression Hybrid Reactive coverstock, reinforced with the proven Carbon Fiber Infused technology (which is what allowed Hammer to offer a three-year warranty at the time). The factory finish of 500/1000 Abralon followed by Powerhouse Factory Finish polish gives the black-and-gold ball a classy look, length through the heads and promises an explosive reaction at the end of the lane.
Comparison
Compared directly to the extremely successful Hammer Black Widow Gold (Pearl), the Black/Gold hybrid version offers one decisive adjustment in ball reaction. Where the pure Gold Pearl tended to slide too far in heavier oil and then turn extremely sharply ("skid/flip"), the hybrid cover of the Black/Gold provides a bit more hold in the midlane. It reads the lane earlier than the Gold, yet still keeps 90% of its aggressiveness in the backend. Compared to a pure solid ball like the Black Widow Red Legend Solid, it is noticeably cleaner through the heads and stores more energy. It sits perfectly in the middle: it isn't as sensitive to over/under reactions as pure pearls, but it is more dynamic than dull solids.
On the Lanes
The Hammer Black Widow Black/Gold is an all-purpose weapon for medium to heavier oil patterns. It shines especially when you need to open up the lane. Thanks to the Gas Mask core, it generates enough flare even from steep angles to get back to the pocket safely. It is ideal for the transition phase, when the heads dry up but there is still oil in the back end (carrydown). The hybrid cover offers enough traction not to slide out in the oil, while the polish helps conserve energy. It's one of those balls that almost always stays in the arsenal, because that "Gas Mask" feel — that late, hard kick into the pins — delivers unmatched carry, especially when you have to keep the pins flat.
