The Hammer Black Widow 3.0 Platinum continues the tradition of one of the best-known product lines in bowling and combines proven core technology with modern developments in cover chemistry. Visually, the ball comes in a striking platinum color that is shown off especially well by the glossy polish and already hints at its intended length. Inside works the legendary Gas Mask core, which has served as the heart of the Black Widow series for years. This asymmetric core is characterized by a 2.500 RG and a high 0.058 differential, along with a 0.016 intermediate differential (at 15 lbs). These numbers suggest high flare potential, which in theory should contribute to a strong directional change at the end of the pattern. The decisive innovation on the 3.0 Platinum lies in the cover used. Here Hammer relies on the HK22 - Aggression Pearl coverstock technology. This chemical composition was developed to allow greater transparency of the molecular structure, which is often associated with a more responsive motion. The surface is finished at the factory with 500, 1000 and 1500 Siaair Micro Pad and then polished with Factory Compound. This combination of technical specification and surface preparation aims to let the ball glide cleanly through the heads in order to conserve energy for the backend. In addition, the ball features the Carbon Fiber Outer Core, which according to the manufacturer should improve durability and energy transfer into the pins.

To better understand where the Black Widow 3.0 Platinum sits, a look at its immediate surroundings within the Hammer brand as well as at the competition is essential. Compared directly to the Hammer Black Widow 3.0 Solid, the Platinum works as an ideal complement. While the solid version is designed to read early in the oil and produce a smooth, controlled motion, the Platinum should react noticeably later. It should generate more length through the heads and show a considerably sharper reaction at the breakpoint. That also separates it from the older Black Widow 2.0 Hybrid, with the Platinum likely running even cleaner through the front part of the lane thanks to the pure pearl blend and the HK22 base. Looking at the market as a whole, the 3.0 Platinum falls into the category of polished asymmetric balls. It competes with models such as the Attention Star from Roto Grip or the Virtual Energy Blackout from Storm. Compared to the Attention Star from Roto Grip, which is also known for its strong backend reaction, the Hammer's Gas Mask core could initiate rotation slightly earlier without sacrificing aggressiveness at the breakpoint. On the Lanes
The technical characteristics of the Black Widow 3.0 Platinum define a clear application profile aimed primarily at lanes with medium to higher oil volume, provided there is a defined friction zone in the backend. Because of the polished pearl cover, this ball is predestined for situations in which dull balls or solid surfaces lose energy too early or react too sluggishly. As soon as the transition sets in and the heads dry up, the Platinum should be able to play to its strengths. It is designed to cover the first several feet of the lane easily ("skid") and then react quickly and dynamically to the available friction in the back end. That makes it an excellent choice when you are forced to play deeper and open the lane up. In terms of player type, the ball should appeal to a broad audience. If you have lower ball speed, you could benefit from the ease with which the ball glides through the heads, while if you have a high rev rate, you should appreciate the Gas Mask core's ability to generate enough carry even at steep angles to reliably take out the corner pins. The ball should deliver a strong hook down lane. It should be noted, however, that on extremely fresh or very long oil patterns ("flooded heads") a polished pearl ball could slide, which is why it should be pulled out of the bag as the second ball, after a stronger solid such as the Black Widow 3.0 Solid has already opened the lane up a bit.
