First Impressions
The Seismic Axion was released in the summer of 2017 as a special edition and is aimed at bowlers looking for a balanced combination of control and backend reaction. Visually, the ball comes in an attractive, highly visible design that is very easy to read on the lane. The technical heart of the Axion is the symmetrical Overb-2 core, a targeted evolution of Seismic's original Overb core. With a radius of gyration of 2.51 and a differential of 0.048, this core delivers moderate flare potential. These specific numbers point to a ball that does not jump too early, but instead stores its dynamic energy very efficiently for the later part of the lane. The symmetrical core is wrapped in the specially developed CLE17 Pearl coverstock. This medium pearl cover was precisely engineered to ensure excellent length through the heads while still providing enough traction once it encounters drier sections of the lane. The factory surface supports this clean push and should ensure that the ball only begins its move after it has passed the oil. The combination of the Overb-2 core's medium-high RG and the reactive CLE17 cover produces a ball motion that can be characterized as very smooth and predictable, without lacking a certain aggressiveness on the way to the pins.
Comparison To place the Seismic Axion's performance range within the current market, a technical comparison with established benchmark balls such as the Storm Hy-Road Pearl makes sense. Both balls use a fairly high-RG symmetrical core and a pearl cover to create good length and a strong reaction at the end of the lane. The Storm Hy-Road Pearl is known in the industry for its extreme length and its sometimes very sharp change of direction at the breakpoint. The Seismic Axion, by contrast, delivers a somewhat softer and noticeably rounder arc toward the pocket thanks to its slightly different core design. While the Storm ball responds massively to sudden friction and creates an extremely pronounced angle, the Axion shows more controlled behavior during the sensitive phase of the transition. It translates the energy from the core into a very continuous hook that is far less prone to error when oil volumes in the midlane shift slightly. Another interesting reference point is the Motiv Venom Shock Pearl. Here too it becomes clear that the Seismic Axion offers a touch more midlane readability thanks to its specific coverstock design, while the Motiv ball glides a bit more freely through the front part of the lane. All in all, the Axion positions itself as a very dependable option in the mid performance segment, one that scores not with uncontrollable, sudden jumps but with steady, easily predictable backend motion.
On the Lanes In practical use on the lane, the Seismic Axion is an enormously versatile tool that shows its full strengths on medium oil conditions and typical house shots in particular. If you have a medium to higher rev rate, you'll quickly notice that the ball glides effortlessly and extremely cleanly through the heads while retaining enough rotational energy for a powerful entry into the pocket. The ball is excellent for opening up the lane later in a tournament and playing deeper boards once the original oil pattern has changed drastically and the initial oil in the front part of the lane has been carried away. When stronger, dull solid balls start to lose energy too early and turn flat into the pins, the Axion provides exactly the length needed to keep hitting the breakpoint precisely. The CLE17 Pearl cover responds very well to the available friction on the outside part of the lane and should generate a reliable hook. Because it continues its arcing motion strongly and deep through the pin deck, the ball achieves excellent carry, which ultimately translates into a very consistent and high pin count. If you have lower ball speed or noticeably fewer revs, the Axion can certainly be used as a primary ball on fresh house shots, since the core promotes even rotation without burning up prematurely. Especially during the critical phase of the transition, this ball's predictable reaction proves to be a major tactical advantage for your game.
