First Impressions
The Roto Grip Attention Star marks a significant step forward within the manufacturer's high-performance line, combining proven core geometries with the latest cover technology. Visually, the ball arrives in a striking Berry, Silver and Iron color scheme, with a factory finish polished with Reacta Gloss. At the heart of the ball sits the Momentous AV + A.I. Core. Here, the asymmetric Momentous core known from the original Attention series has been merged with Roto Grip's modern A.I. (Amplified Inertia) Outer Core technology. This combination results in specs that point to strong dynamics: at 15 lbs, the RG sits at a low 2.48, which suggests the core revs up early, while the 0.049 differential and the 0.017 intermediate differential (PSA) should provide substantial flare potential. The cover is the eTrax PLUS Pearl Reactive coverstock. This material choice aims to increase traction in oil slightly compared to conventional pearl blends without sacrificing the typical length. The combination of the core's low RG and the polished pearl surface promises an interesting balance: the core physically wants to rotate early, while the cover should let the ball glide cleanly through the heads to conserve energy for the back end of the lane.
Comparison
Placed head to head with other balls on the market, the Roto Grip Attention Star fills a gap that is often hard to cover: clean glide through the heads paired with a defined reaction to friction. Compared to the Roto Grip Exotic Gem, the Attention Star should offer a bit more length and show a somewhat quicker response to friction, since the eTrax PLUS coverstock is generally considered more reactive than the Exotic Gem's MicroTrax Pearl. Against the Roto Grip Attention T (the solid-surface predecessor), the Attention Star should get into its move noticeably later and generate a more angular motion into the pocket, making it the logical complement when the Attention T loses energy too early. Compared to balls from other manufacturers, such as the Storm Virtual Energy Blackout, the Attention Star may produce a slightly rounder, more controllable shape of hook thanks to the Momentous core rather than turning extremely abruptly. It appears designed to be stronger than symmetrical pearl balls like the Roto Grip Duo, yet still travel more cleanly through the heads than the big asymmetric "snowplows" like the Roto Grip Gem. According to the manufacturer, the A.I. technology in the core is also meant to optimize pin scatter, which could in theory improve carry, especially on less than perfect hits.
On the Lanes
The ideal application for the Roto Grip Attention Star is primarily on medium to medium-heavy oil patterns. Because of the polished pearl surface, the ball should play to its strengths especially once the lane has gone through some transition and the heads begin to dry up. If you struggle to get the ball far enough down the lane before it starts to hook, this ball could be a solution. It is designed to cover the first several feet of the lane (the heads) effortlessly and to release its energy only in the mid to back part of the lane, once it encounters friction. That makes it an excellent choice for playing deeper angles and crossing more boards without worrying about the ball burning up or missing the pocket. For tournament players, the Attention Star could be the first ball out of the bag when the aggressive solid balls (such as a Roto Grip Gem or Harsh Reality) start hooking too early. It should have enough core strength to keep rotating in oil, but relies primarily on the backend reaction. Beginners with higher ball speed may find that the ball slides too far when there is too much oil, so adjusting the surface with a sanding pad (for example 2000 or 3000 Abralon) could be considered to smooth out the reaction.
