First Impressions
The Roto Grip Attention Edge expands the popular Attention series with a powerful solid version developed specifically for more traction in oil. At its heart sits the proven Momentous AV + A.I. Core, an asymmetric core optimized through A.I. technology (Amplified Inertia). With a 2.48 RG and a 0.049 differential (at 15 lbs), this core produces early and quick revving. The decisive feature of this ball, however, is the NanoStar Solid Reactive coverstock. Shipped with a coarse 2000-grit finish, the Attention Edge signals immediately that it wasn't built for length, but to dig into the boards early. The combination of the fast-revving core and the tacky solid cover creates a stable, arcing motion that eliminates skid on fresh oil and transfers energy into the pocket in a controlled manner.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Roto Grip Attention Star, which is known for plenty of length and a sharp change of direction on the backend thanks to its pearl cover and Reacta Gloss polish, the Attention Edge behaves in the exact opposite way. It reads the lane considerably earlier and smooths out the reaction at the breakpoint. Where the Attention Star often skids past the spot when there's too much oil, the Edge builds friction right away. Compared to a pure "snowplow" like the Roto Grip Gem, though, the Attention Edge feels a bit more dynamic through the heads, since the Momentous core has a greater tendency to rev up than the extremely low-RG-heavy Defiant LRG core in the Gem. Performance-wise it sits close to a Storm Phaze II, but the asymmetry and the A.I. core give it more torque and define the hook in oil earlier.
On the Lanes
The Roto Grip Attention Edge is the first choice for fresh, oily lanes where control matters more than maximum backend angle. It works excellently if you throw the ball fast and need help getting the ball to start up in time, or for tournament players on flat sport patterns where an overreaction on the backend has to be avoided. The 2000-grit finish cleanly blends out wet/dry transitions and provides a heavy, rolling carry. Once the lane goes into transition and the heads dry up, however, it's time to switch to a ball like the Attention Star or a hybrid, since the Edge could then lose energy too early.
