First Impressions
Released in July 2012, the Hammer Arson Pearl expands the successful Arson line with an option for more length and backend reaction. Visually, the ball comes in a dynamic "Red/Blue/Silver" color scheme that stands out immediately on the shelf. Technically, Hammer relies on the proven symmetrical Arson Core, which already caused a stir in the original solid model. With a low RG of 2.48 and a solid differential of 0.045 (at 15 lbs), this core is known for getting into rotation quickly (revving up). The decisive distinguishing feature, however, is the Max-Bend Pearl Reactive coverstock. Unlike its matte predecessor, this ball ships from the factory with a high-gloss polish (factory finish polish). This combination lets the ball glide effortlessly through the heads despite the strong core and save its energy for the last third of the lane.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Hammer Arson (Solid), the pearl version behaves fundamentally differently. While the solid reads the lane early and makes a very round, controlled move, the Arson Pearl offers considerably more length and a much sharper reaction to friction at the end of the oil pattern. It is the classic "step-down" option. Compared with a high-performance ball of that era such as the Hammer Taboo, the Arson Pearl generates less overall hook, but it is much cleaner through the heads and easier to control when the oil volume decreases. Compared with a Storm Hy-Road, the Arson Pearl is somewhat more stable in the midlane due to its lower RG value (2.48 vs. 2.57) and is less prone to shooting past the breakpoint, but it offers a similarly aggressive angle into the pocket.
On the Lanes
The Hammer Arson Pearl is predestined for medium to light oil conditions as well as typical house league scenarios (house shots). Its great strength comes out when the lane goes through transition and the heads dry up. When stronger balls start working too early, the Arson Pearl's polished surface allows the line to be held without losing energy. It is ideal if you want to open up the angle and play from the inside out across the boards ("inside line"). The Max-Bend Pearl coverstock reacts quickly to dry areas, which leads to a strong entry angle and outstanding carry. For heavy oil or very long patterns it is less suitable, since it could react too sensitively to the "over/under" effect here and skid too far.
