BOWLING BALL INFOS

First Impressions
Released in September 1997, the AMF AMForce 2 is the higher-performance companion to the entry-level model of the series introduced at the same time. While the AMForce 1 was designed for dry lanes, the AMForce 2 aims for more traction. Technically it is also built around the symmetrical VersaCore weight block, known for its balanced mass distribution and medium flare numbers. The decisive difference is in the cover: here the VersaCover 2 Reactive coverstock is used. Unlike the polished version on its little brother, this surface received a duller factory finish (often referred to as sanded or dull polish) in order to grab the oil earlier. Usually finished in darker shades such as teal or forest green, the ball signals through its looks alone that it was built for more friction in the midlane and describes a rounder, more controllable shape than hectic skid-flip balls.
Comparison
Compared directly to the AMF AMForce 1, the AMForce 2 is noticeably earlier and smoother. Where the AMForce 1 skids across the oil film and only turns abruptly at the dry end of the lane (hook), the AMForce 2 already starts working in the midlane. It reads the boards earlier and creates a gentle arc to the pocket. Compared to a Columbia 300 Messenger (a popular competitor of that era), the AMForce 2 behaves in a similarly controlled fashion, but thanks to the VersaCore it often offers a somewhat softer motion in the backend. Against a powerhouse like the Brunswick Danger Zone, however, the AMForce 2 comes across as tamer; it generates less overall hook and covers fewer boards, which makes it easier to control when lane conditions get unsettled.
On the Lanes
The AMF AMForce 2 is a classic benchmark ball for light to medium oil. Its strength lies in its predictability. It is the ideal choice when the lane is freshly oiled but the oil pattern is not long or heavy enough for high-performance balls. It prevents the ball from sliding through the breakpoint (squirt), something that often happens with polished balls on fresh oil, by using the friction earlier. That makes it especially valuable if you prefer an even ball reaction and play the ball fairly straight to slightly angled (stroker). It delivers excellent carry on pocket hits, since its rolling motion transfers energy into the pins in a linear fashion instead of jumping across the deck.
