First Impressions
The 900Global After Dark Pearl in the Blue/Silver color scheme is an elegant addition to the entry-level segment and looks very appealing thanks to its metallic shimmer. Technically, this ball is designed to provide maximum control on dry lanes. At its center works the proven Nightfall Symmetric Core, which with a very high RG of 2.56 and a low differential of 0.030 (at 15 lbs) ensures that the ball goes into rotation extremely late. This core is wrapped in the S30 Pearl Reactive coverstock. This is one of the weakest reactive blends in the 900Global arsenal. Out of the box, the ball comes with a 1500 grit polished finish. This combination of weak core, hard cover and polish means the ball nearly ignores the heads and the midlane and saves all of its energy for the last few feet.
Comparison
The direct comparison partner is the 900Global After Dark Solid. While the solid version (also Nightfall core) at least offers some traction in oil thanks to its matte surface and rolls rounder, the Blue/Silver Pearl goes even longer and reacts a bit more defined at the breakpoint, though by no means aggressively. Compared to a Roto Grip Hustle (e.g. Hustle Ink or newer models), the After Dark Pearl is another step weaker and more controllable; the Hustle often generates more backend motion. Against a Storm Tropical Surge, the After Dark Pearl behaves very similarly: both are built to avoid friction, with the After Dark often coming across a shade more stable down the lane and reacting less jumpy to dry spots.
On the Lanes
The 900Global After Dark Pearl is the perfect solution for extremely dry lanes or burned-up heads. It's the ideal ball if you're getting started and want to learn how to throw a hook, since it forgives mistakes at the release and doesn't overreact. For advanced tournament players it's an important weapon late in the block, when even weak balls like the Hustle become too strong. It lets you play near the gutter or straight up the second arrow without the ball going through the nose. It absolutely needs dry boards on the backend (friction) to make any direction change at all; on fresh oil it will just skid straight.
