First Impressions
The Hammer 3-D Offset Attack brings a modern legend back to the lanes in a new shell. Visually, the ball comes in a rich combination of "Vivid Blue" and "Navy," giving it a very classic yet sporty look. Technically, it is built on the High Rev Offset core, an asymmetric construction that at 15 lbs shows a low RG of 2.489, a high differential of 0.053, and an intermediate differential of 0.008, which is rather low for an asymmetric ball. These numbers produce an early revving and an extremely stable rotation. The real innovation sits in the cover: Hammer uses the Neoflex 25 Microcell Polymer Pearl material here. This technology, chemically positioned between urethane and reactive but clearly closer to reactive behavior in this case, is finished with 500/1000/1500 Siaair and polished with Factory Compound. The result is a ball that glides very cleanly through the heads and visually stores enormous energy for the backend.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Hammer 3-D Offset (Solid) released shortly before it, often referred to as "the orange one," the Attack goes noticeably longer and reacts more sharply. Where the solid predecessor digs into the lane early and shows a very round, smooth motion, the Attack uses the pearl surface and the compound finish to release its energy farther down the lane. Compared with the popular Hammer Black Widow series (e.g. the Black Widow Ghost Pearl), however, the 3-D Offset Attack behaves differently: because of the very low intermediate differential, it reacts less abruptly ("snappy") at the breakpoint than the Gas Mask core of the Widows does. It offers a more continuous, heavier roll phase into the pin deck. Against a market competitor like the Roto Grip RST X-2, the Attack often reads the midlane a bit earlier but stays more controllable on the backend.
On the Lanes
The Hammer 3-D Offset Attack is made for medium oil conditions and is the perfect follow-up when the lane starts to change ("transition"). When the original 3-D Offset or other strong solid balls begin to hook too early and lose energy, the Attack plays to its strengths. It glides effortlessly over the played-in heads and, thanks to the Microcell Polymer technology, generates enough traction in the oil not to slip, yet still reacts in defined fashion to the dry boards on the backend. It lets you open up your angle to the pocket without losing the control you expect from balls with a lower intermediate differential. It's ideal if you love the heavy roll of an asymmetric core but need a cleaner motion through the heads to maximize carry.
