First Impressions
The AMF Blue X-Tra Lightnin, released around 1985, represents the most extreme step in the Lightnin series and was designed for maximum length. Visually, the ball shows up in a striking, lighter blue than its stablemates from the Angle series. Technically, it is based on a very hard urethane formulation intended to generate as little friction on the lane as possible. Inside works a classic three-piece pancake weight block. This combination of hard cover, high RG and minimal differential means the ball generates practically no flare. Polished to a high gloss out of the box, the Blue X-Tra Lightnin behaves almost like a modern polyester ball: it skids extremely far through the heads and shows hardly any inclination to change direction, even when it hits dry boards.
Comparison
Compared directly to the regular AMF Blue Lightnin, which was already considered a controllable entry-level ball, the X-Tra Lightnin goes one step further in terms of straight-line motion. While the normal Blue Lightnin can still describe a slight arc toward the pocket in very dry conditions, the X-Tra eliminates that hook almost entirely. It is even "deader" on the lane. Set against the AMF Angle Blue, there are worlds between them: the Angle is a performance ball that works and brushes the pins; the X-Tra Lightnin is a pure directional ball. A modern comparison would be the Storm Mix: both balls use a urethane base for durability but behave like a spare ball in their motion characteristics (for example the Storm Ice), with the X-Tra Lightnin often coming across as even harder and smoother than today's urethane due to its age and the material chemistry of the 1980s.
On the Lanes
The AMF Blue X-Tra Lightnin has a crystal-clear purpose: it is the ultimate spare ball if you value the durability of urethane but need the calm motion of plastic. It is perfectly suited for picking off single pins (especially corner pins like the 10) with precision, since it largely ignores the friction of the lane. Beyond that, it is a "secret weapon" on extremely burned lanes or desert conditions, where even weak reactive balls jump around uncontrollably. It lets you play with your normal release and speed without fear of an overreaction into the pocket. Its carry potential is low because of the inactive core, which is why it only works as a strike ball in absolute emergencies on extremely short oil patterns.
