BOWLING BALL INFOS

First Impressions
Released in 1985, the AMF Angle Purple adds another step to the revolutionary Angle series within the urethane segment. Visually, the ball comes in a rich, matte violet that underscores the functional orientation of the 1980s. Technically, the ball is based on AMF's proven urethane formulation, developed to close the gap between the harder polyester balls and the softer rubber balls. Inside works a traditional 3-piece pancake weight block. This construction produces a high RG and a minimal differential, which means the ball generates almost no flare (track flare) in the oil. The surface is sanded at the factory, which gives the ball consistent traction and allows it to describe a very even, arcing path down the lane without reacting abruptly to dry areas.
Comparison
Within the Angle family, the Purple Angle is positioned strategically between the aggressive AMF Black Angle and the length-oriented AMF Gold Angle. Compared directly to the Black Angle, which was known for its very early start and strong hook on heavier oil, the Purple Angle shows a bit more length through the heads and a smoother reaction in the midlane. It isn't quite as "digging" as the Black, but it offers noticeably more traction than the Gold Angle. Comparing it to the modern benchmark for violet urethane, the Hammer Purple Pearl Urethane, the technological shift becomes clear: the AMF Angle Purple lacks the dynamic core, which is why it runs much flatter into the pocket and looks less explosive at the pin deck (carry). It is a classic control ball, not a power ball.
On the Lanes
These days the AMF Angle Purple is an excellent tool for extremely dry lanes or short, demanding sport patterns. Its urethane cover smooths out the reaction on the lane (friction) and prevents the unpredictable jumping that modern reactive balls often show on such surfaces. It suits players who prefer a direct line and lay the ball into the pocket with consistent rotation (strokers). Since it has no modern core to correct mistakes at release or at the breakpoint, it demands precision. It is often used as a high-quality spare ball as well, since it holds its line on a straight approach but offers enough traction with slight rotation not to slide past "sleeper" pins.
