First Impressions
Released in July 2018, the Track Kinetic Amethyst continues one of the most popular and longest-running lines in the bowling market. The Kinetic has earned a reputation as a "wolf in sheep's clothing," since it sits in the mid price range but often performs like a high-end ball. Inside works the legendary asymmetric Shuttle core. This is a technical peculiarity: although it is asymmetric, it shows an extremely low intermediate differential of just 0.005 (at 15 lbs), combined with a low 2.48 RG and a moderate 0.040 differential. That means it offers the versatility of a symmetric ball with the "kick" of an asymmetric one. It is wrapped in the QR-6 Pearl Reactive coverstock in a brilliant amethyst color. With the factory finish of 500/1000 Abralon and Powerhouse Factory Finish polish, this ball is clearly geared toward length and a quick reaction.
Comparison
In a direct comparison with the Track Kinetic Ruby (which came out shortly before), the Amethyst moves noticeably more angular. The Ruby (often a bit rougher or more hybrid-like in its reaction) read the midlane better and was smoother. The Amethyst, on the other hand, uses the QR-6 Pearl shell to glide effortlessly through the heads and stores almost all of its energy for the backend. Compared with the Track Kinetic Emerald, the Amethyst is very similar, but thanks to the slightly adjusted cover formula it often feels a tick sharper in its change of direction ("snappy"). Against competitors like the Ebonite Game Breaker 2 Gold (which rolls smoother and more continuous), the Kinetic Amethyst offers a more abrupt reaction to friction, which makes it come across as more dynamic.
On the Lanes
The Track Kinetic Amethyst is an absolute monster on medium to lightly oily lanes. It is the ideal ball for the second or third game in league play. When the heads are dry and stronger balls (like a Precision or Paradox) burn up energy too early, the Amethyst is there. It skids over the burn and uses the dry boards at the end of the lane for a massive hook into the pocket. Thanks to the Shuttle core, it maintains a very stable rotation while doing so. It works excellently for opening up the pocket and playing steep angles, but it should be handled with care on fresh, longer oil, where it tends to slide too far (over/under).
