First Impressions
The Track Cyborg Pearl, released in December 2016, adds a polished option for more length to Track's high-performance line. Visually the ball comes in a combination of Silver and Black Cherry, which gives it a classy, technical look. Inside works the proven asymmetric Cyborg Core, which is technologically notable because the "pancake" section (the densest part) has been integrated into the main body of the core in order to better preserve the dynamics after drilling. The numbers are a 2.48 RG and a 0.043 differential, complemented by an intermediate differential of 0.007. This core is wrapped in the QR-7 Pearl coverstock (Quick Response), which comes out of the box with a 500/1000 Abralon sanding and Powerhouse Factory Finish Polish. This combination of low RG and polished pearl surface promises a quick revving of the core along with easy glide through the heads.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Track Cyborg, which uses a hybrid cover, the pearl version moves noticeably cleaner through the heads and saves more energy for the backend. While the hybrid Cyborg reads earlier and moves rounder, the pearl creates a classic skid/flip reaction. Compared with the Storm Code Black, popular at roughly the same time, the Cyborg Pearl shows similar length characteristics but is often a tick more controllable at the breakpoint. The Code Black generates a more extreme change of direction thanks to its higher differential, while the Cyborg Pearl, with its 0.043 differential, reacts angularly but somewhat more forgivingly. Against an Ebonite Maverick, which is built for heavy oil, the Cyborg Pearl serves as the ideal step down (ball down) when the Maverick loses energy too early.
On the Lanes
The Cyborg Pearl is the ideal choice for medium oil and lanes that have already developed a defined dry area. Its main application is the transition: when dull-sanded solid balls start to hook too early and lose power, the Cyborg Pearl lets you move deeper on the lane and attack the pocket from a bigger angle. It glides effortlessly over broken-down heads and reacts lightning-fast to the friction at the end of the pattern. If you have a lower ball speed, it provides the support you need to get the ball far enough down the lane without giving up a strong move at the end. On very heavy oil, though, it could react too sensitively (over/under), since it lacks the necessary surface bite for that.
