First Impressions
The Storm Gate One was released in March 2018 as an exclusive overseas model and represents a technically upgraded version within the Gate series. Color-wise, the ball comes in a combination of Sapphire, Black and Silver. The heart of this model is the asymmetric Ignition Core, developed specifically for powerful energy release. In the 15-pound version, this core has a low RG of 2.49, a high differential of 0.052 and a significant intermediate differential of 0.019. The coverstock is the proven R3S Solid Reactive, known for its balance between traction and energy retention. The surface is dulled at the factory with a 3000 grit Abralon finish, giving the ball a tacky texture so it runs stably through the heads and already shows a strong presence in the midlane.
Comparison Compared to the original Storm Gate, which used a hybrid cover, the Gate One delivers a noticeably earlier and smoother reaction to the oil pattern thanks to its R3S Solid cover. Where the Gate was known for its angularity off the backend, the Gate One shifts the emphasis of the motion more into the midlane. Compared to the Storm Phaze II, the Gate One is considerably more dynamic due to its asymmetric Ignition Core and shows a stronger change of direction as soon as it reaches friction. Compared to the Storm Sure Lock, the Gate One offers a cleaner skid phase through the first boards, since the R3S material reacts less aggressively than the Sure Lock's NRG nanotechnology. Against a symmetric ball like the Storm IQ Tour Solid, the Gate One provides a massively higher overall hook potential and a much steeper angle into the pin deck, making it a more powerful option for higher oil volume.
On the Lanes The Storm Gate One is designed primarily for medium to heavy oil conditions and works as an excellent benchmark ball in the asymmetric segment. Through the combination of the quick-revving Ignition Core and the dull solid cover, the ball reads the lane conditions very well. It is especially effective on fresh house shots or sport patterns where a stable midlane reaction is decisive in avoiding unpredictable jumps at the breakpoint. If you throw the ball fast, you'll appreciate the traction of the 3000 finish, as it prevents the ball from sliding through the oil and starts a controlled roll phase. Rev-dominant players can use the Gate One to play deeper angles, with the asymmetric core providing the necessary response and strong carry. On very dry lanes, however, the ball could react too early and lose energy, so in those cases a switch to a polished pearl model is advisable. In the pocket, the Gate One impresses with continuous power transfer and the high pin action typical of Storm balls.
