First Impressions
The Storm Code Star presents itself as an Asian/international premium release in a classy, multi-color look. Inside works the extremely strong asymmetric RAD4 core with a 2.500 RG, a massive 0.058 differential and a 0.020 intermediate differential. For the surface, Storm relies on a highly polished R2S Pearl/Hybrid Reactive cover. This combination of the quick-revving RAD4 core and the low-friction, smooth shell should let the ball clear the heads effortlessly and save its energy for a massive, asymmetric kick in the backend.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Storm Code Black, which also uses an R2S Pearl cover, the Code Star behaves extremely similarly and provides a drastic backend motion. Against the Storm Alpha Crux, which uses a dull solid cover, the Code Star delivers far cleaner length, but builds up a similarly powerful hook thanks to the same core type. When friction on the lane is high and the transition dries up the front part of the lane, the Code Star preserves its energy very well and reacts sharply at the breakpoint.
On the Lanes
The Storm Code Star is ideally suited to lane conditions with medium oil volume. For strokers and if you throw at moderate ball speed, it offers the option of playing deeper lines, since the shell saves energy while the strong core provides the response off the friction. The asymmetric drive toward the pocket should deliver convincing carry. On fresh, extremely heavy oil, however, this ball can lack traction due to the polished finish. It is a weapon for asymmetric backend power.
