First Impressions
The Roto Grip IDOL Pro comes in a striking Ocean Blue look and represents a carefully thought-out evolution of the popular IDOL series. It features the proven symmetrical Ikon Core, which at 15 pounds shows an RG of 2.49 and a differential of 0.052. These numbers should provide appropriate flare potential and backend motion. The cover is made from the newly developed eTrax-S19 solid reactive material, specially formulated to offer more traction in oil without reading too early. The defining characteristic of the IDOL Pro is its 3000-grit sheen surface — the first time Roto Grip has used this finishing method. This surface treatment is achieved through a combination of factory polishing followed by a 3000-grit sanding.
Comparison
Compared to the original IDOL, the Pro is cleaner through the heads and develops more shape in the backend. The absence of nano particles in the cover yields about 2-3 boards more hook than the classic IDOL, with this additional motion occurring mainly in the backend. Against the Roto Grip IDOL Pearl, the Pro moves about 5 boards earlier and stronger, which makes it better suited to medium to heavy oil conditions. Compared with the Storm Phaze II, the IDOL Pro shows a rounder shape, while the Phaze II runs a bit longer and reacts more angularly at the breakpoint. The comparisons to the other balls in the IDOL family show that the Pro serves as the link between the strong, early original and the long, reaction-happy Pearl.
On the Lanes
The IDOL Pro should prove optimal on medium oil conditions, but it also has its place on medium to heavy conditions. Players with a variety of rev rates can benefit from its controlled ball motion, and it is particularly interesting for bowlers looking for a reliable benchmark ball. Its smooth motion through the heads paired with the controlled backend reaction makes it the ideal transition ball when the original IDOL becomes too sluggish. The 3000-grit sheen surface gives it versatility and allows adjustments for different lane patterns. Its predictable behavior and good energy retention make it interesting for both league play and tournament conditions, especially when controlled reactions are called for.
