First Impressions
The Roto Grip Idol Pearl, released in November 2018, immediately catches the eye with its striking color combination of "Royal" and "Amethyst." Technically it's built on the proven symmetrical Ikon core, which produces early rev with a low 2.49 RG and a high 0.052 differential (at 15 lbs). This core is wrapped in the eTrax-P18 Pearl Reactive coverstock. With its factory 1500-grit polish, the ball looks very clean out of the box, but the aggressive core numbers promise more motion in oil than typical mid-priced pearl balls.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Roto Grip Idol (Solid), the Pearl goes noticeably longer and reacts far more aggressively to friction at the end of the oil pattern. Where the Idol Solid reads the lane early and creates a rounded, controlled motion, the Idol Pearl stores its energy longer and delivers a sharper entry angle into the pocket. Against a Storm Hy-Road, which is also known for length, the Idol Pearl offers more overall hook thanks to its stronger core and reads the midlane a bit earlier, yet still stays cleaner through the heads than a Storm Phaze II.
On the Lanes
This ball is the ideal weapon for medium oil conditions and shines especially once the lane starts to break down (transition). As soon as more solid balls like the Idol or Halo lose energy too early, the Idol Pearl lets you move further inside and throw the ball out to the dry boards. It generates enough length to get through played-in heads, but thanks to the strong core it offers enough traction to come back reliably even with a little more oil in the backend. It's an excellent fit for league bowlers on house patterns looking for a benchmark pearl ball with strong carry.
