First Impressions
Released in August 2018, the Roto Grip Halo was developed with one clear goal: to generate maximum traction on the heaviest oil patterns. It positions itself as the new "hook monster" in the HP4 lineup. Inside works the innovative asymmetric Centrum core, designed specifically to get the ball rolling early and keep that rotation stable. With a low 2.49 RG and a solid 0.050 differential (at 15 lbs), this core provides ideal conditions for an early roll and high flare potential. Wrapped around this engine is the MicroTrax-S18 Solid Reactive coverstock. This nanotechnology shell is even more aggressive than the blends used on the previous models. The factory finish of 2000 grit pad gives the ball, in Coal/Fuchsia/Sky Blue, a rough, matte texture that bites the moment the ball leaves your hand.
Comparison
Within the brand, the Halo takes over from the legendary Hyper Cell series. Compared to the Roto Grip Hyper Cell Fused (which was polished), the Halo moves considerably earlier and smoother. It is not a skid/flip ball, but one built for pure, raw power in oil. Looking outside the brand, the Halo plays in the same heavyweight class as the Storm Sure Lock. Both balls are designed to dig up the lane. The Halo, however, often distinguishes itself with a somewhat more continuous motion off the backend. While extremely strong balls often tend to "stop" at the breakpoint (hook-set), the Halo retains more energy for driving through the pins thanks to the Centrum core. It is clearly stronger and earlier than a Roto Grip Idol, yet offers more control than typical asymmetric pearl balls.
On the Lanes
The Roto Grip Halo is a specialty tool for heavy oil and longer sport patterns. It is the absolute first choice on fresh lanes when there is a thick layer of oil in the heads and midlane, where other balls simply hydroplane. It generates traction where there appears to be none, and it lets you play deeper in the oil ("throwing into the soup") without having to worry that the ball will refuse to change direction. If you throw the ball fast, it is an indispensable tool for getting the ball into a roll early. As soon as the heads dry up or transition sets in, though, the Halo usually becomes too strong and starts hooking too early, which makes a move to shinier balls necessary. Its carry on heavy oil is phenomenal, however, since it keeps the pins low and mixes them powerfully.
