First Impressions
The Roto Grip Hy-Wire comes in a fascinating purple, blue and silver hybrid color blend. At the heart of this model beats the symmetrical Middle Roll 70 Core, which shows a 2.500 RG and a solid 0.043 differential. The outer layer consists of the 62M Hybrid Reactive coverstock, finished out of the box with a 1500 grit polish. This combination of a medium-early revving motor and the polished hybrid shell should let the ball glide easily through the heads while still providing a predictable, powerful reaction in the midlane.
Comparison
Compared to the Roto Grip Haywire, with its strong matte solid cover, the Hy-Wire offers noticeably more length and a more agile backend reaction. Next to the Storm Phaze II, the Hy-Wire delivers considerably cleaner length through the heads. When friction on the lane increases and the transition dries up the front part of the lane, this ball benefits enormously from its hybrid cover. It stores its energy better than a solid, but reacts more steadily than pure pearl shells. The hook is arcing and hard-hitting.
On the Lanes
The Roto Grip Hy-Wire is best suited to lane conditions with medium oil volume. For strokers and tweeners it offers the chance to play consistent lines on broken-down patterns, since the surface finds moderate traction. The strong drive toward the pocket should deliver convincing carry, as the ball works continuously through the pins. Once the lane is extremely wet, however, the ball can slide through the fronts because of the polish. In those moments a matte cover is the better call.
